The pass in the dirt

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Keep in mind, that veteran has acted like a child all offseason starting with an irresponsible broken arm.

I love Smith but the same fire most of you love about him, including me, is the same fire Clausen has. You can't excuse one and punish the other kinda thing ya know?

While I have certainly enjoyed Smith over the years, I am not as high on him and think he is the savior of this team like many others. Yes he is a play maker but what he can do is directly dependent on the QB.

Frankly I like that Clausen stepped up.I was screaming hell yeah on the kickoff return when Clausen got in the face of a NO player before coming on the field for the first time. If the OP has any truth to it and Clausen did in fact sabotage a pass or intentionally overlook Smith on other passes, then I like that for our QB. It's not taking charge YET but also it sends a message to other players that this is the QB, respect your role and respect his. I don't like the idea of doing it on purpose, but at the same time since we are almost already out of any chance for playoff contention anyway, then yeah I applaud Clausen for not taking any crap or standing up for himself (in some perverse way) for what he felt might have been a slight to him and his position.

My comments concerning Smith were not to excuse him for his behavior, but rather show a bit of understanding for his plight. That's not to say I know whats its like to be an NFL player at the top of their game but cant get the support they need to take it to the next level, but rather understanding the emotions of a man who wants and dreams for something that is slipping away from him each week. I feel sorry for the guy, and wish we could give him what he desires.

Uh oh, CRA and panthers55 are in here, guys. Everyone turn your Moore Filter on that Zod supplied us with.

That said, I think Mr Scot was reading too much into that play. I don't see why Jimmy would waste a down to prove a point. He could simply ignore Smitty and not throw it his way. He did probably not like Smith getting in his face, though, deserved as it was or not. I hope Jimmy would stand up for himself in any situation though. A QB is supposed to lead, no matter how long he's been behind center. They said it Sunday night. Young QBs and young WRs respect one another and grow together. Old WRs don't like a young QB telling them anything. If these two are on the wrong page, I don't see them getting back on it. But we already know Smith speaks his mind. Let's hope Jimmy can hold his own.

ever since smith got on Clausen on the sidelines I have seen a lot of posters turn on him..

It was not that big of a deal..and if this is true and I dont think it is then Clausen would be in the wrong here.lets not forget what dropped him to the 2nd round.

You are looking at it as an isolated incident. It's a series of events.

Steve Smith needs to make a decision whether he thinks he does or not.

Either,

1. Acknowledge that he is on a rebuilding team that is not anywhere close to a Super Bowl and step up a become a real leader; or,

2. Request a trade and leave.

What he shouldn't do is what he's doing now. Whether he intends to or not he's done everything wrong with a rookie quarterback. Yelling at him on the sidelines? Expecting him to thread the needle into double coverage so he can get his looks? Sitting out practices with one problem after another? Doing zero publicly to aknowlege Jimmy as an integral part of the offense (see Jordan Gross)?

Some leader.

Did anyone notice that since Randy Moss' recent comments he's playing himself out of the offense? Guess how many passes he caught from Brady last night on MNF? Zero. None. Zilch. The Pats won 41-14.

I just decided, I hope that Jimmy did throw that pass in the "dirt". The Panther's need someone concerned with this young team to lead it.

I hate threads like this. It puts baseless ideas in people’s heads, and then they start talking about it as if it is a fact. No matter how many times you say it is only conjecture or that you are simply wondering, too many people will take this and run with it. IMO, this creates a divide among fans and a problem where none existed, and it is how unfair and unjust reputations begin.

Lot of hypotheticals, but okay, for the sake of discussion, let's carry on...

"If you believe that's true, it could be argued that Clausen asserting himself would be a good thing. A leader needs to act like a leader, and sometimes that can mean putting other guys in their place."

Wow, I'm not sure I'm ready to assume Jimmy Clausen is a leader on this team. There's no "rule" that says a QB is the leader on a team, no positional hierarchy that lays claim to the leadership role just because you're a QB. I think it's far easier to make the assumption that Steve Smith is the leader of this team and with a known personality and a proven veteran like Smith, I'd be hesitant to even remotely think that Smith is going to pass the reins of leadership to an unproven rookie until the rookie proves himself worthy.

"Regardless of which side you'd take in this argument (all of which is hypothetical until proven otherwise) the last thing the Panthers need at this point is any sort of schism, especially one that has anything to do with the guy that the team needs to be able to rally around."

This reminds me of the "Matt Moore or Jimmy Clausen for starter" argument that basically calls for fans to take sides, and that's where the argument starts- you're either a Matt Moore fan or a Jimmy Clausen fan, and you can't be both. It has created a huge divide on this message board and among fans in the stadium. Again, the assumption is being made that the team needs to rally around Clausen for some reason which I think goes back to the "leader" issue. The team will rally around who they feel can step up and lead, they are not going to bear false allegiance to some rookie kid who possibly hasn't earned any modicum of respect or displayed any willingness to become one of the guys (one of the issues that surfaced about him in high school and at Notre Dame).

You ABSOLUTELY need for your starting QB to be a leader on your team. Like it or not, this is Clausen's team now.

lol. Even if you don't think Jimmy Clausen is a leader just because he's a quarterback, I'm pretty sure Jimmy Clausen thinks he's a leader because he's a quarterback. No one calls their WRs over to stay with him and work on plays for a summer for fun. Jimmy Clausen is going to win. He wants to win, he's going to put that idea into everyone's head. (oh shi- inception). He doesn't care who else is on the team, he's going to treat this like his team.

(I wish he'd put a little air on his balls every now and then... no homo)

So you side with Matt Moore. Got it.

My point is, if I had a choice between Peyton when he was drafted and Jimmy when he was drafted, I'd take Peyton. Because he was/is the hardest working QB in all of football. He wants to know everything about the game, and how to be the best. That simple fact alone shows he knew he needed to earn it.

Jimmy was good at ND for a single season against very weak competition. His draft stock fell for a reason.

He was good for two years and excellent in his junior season. He was so good Golden Tate let his draft decision hang on whatever Clausen decided to do.

And ND played a decent schedule. They always do.

Oh and Brantley sucks.
