Our Defense Is Good

It's not easy to throw the deep ball against Tampa-2 defense. We gave them all the short throws they wanted, but short throws are not as safe as running the ball. Our defenisve goal was to generate turnovers by swarming/striping/nailing the recievers after the catch. Our defense had plenty of opportunities to unload on vulnerable recievers looking to get yards after the catch. Godfrey is becoming notrious for blasting recievers before they can get turned around and get their feet set. That's how you win even though you're giving up the short pass. You punish the recievers, RB/WR/TE, make them suffer for all their catches.

The problem with our defense is that the QB isn't worried at all. He's not getting hit, and so he can keep his composure. He has all the time in the world to make a decision, and not worry about getting hurt. That's a big part of the reason we're winless. That's going to change next season. I'm almost certain we're going to draft and buy pass rushers who can generate the pressure we need to win. Either that, or Panther fans won't be at BOA.

That and we allowed two backup HB's to run the ball right down our throat.
yeah, that was kind of embarrassing. only reason they were able to do that, though, was because we had to keep them so heavily covered in the backfield. it wasn't so much the ability of their RBs as it was how much attention we had to pay to keep the big passing plays limited. if you can keep people out of the box you can run a lot more efficiently.

i know thats what's going to get our run game going.

No our defense is not good. Our defense showed a little bit of promise in the most recent game. And we have some talent and drive which means they will give us some good games.

1) 31-20-20-16 are the points so far. 16 is good, 20 is ok 31 stinks.

2) 376-273-305-383 are the net yards. 383 is from the game you are harping

3) Sacks -1-0-1-1

4) Secondary has looked terrible at times. Especially the first 3 games which were terrible teams

5) Questionable against the run

Not sure what defense we have been watching but the overall grade is around a D+/C-

Did you not read what I said? When our defense is on the field for almost as much plays as an entire game, they are going to have yards against them. To even be in games with our offense should let you know just how good this defense is.

Yes I read what you said. You picked one strange stat out of one game to somehow argue that our Defense is "good."

They are not if you look at the entire body of work.

They are actually "bad"

But with energy and promise

Stats don't mean anything. But you are the only person on here that thinks our offense has been great. If our defense isn't good, the offense must be keeping us in games. Watch all 4 games again, cause he haven't been watching what I have.

If you factor in the number of plays against us, we are in the middle.

We are 8th in yards surrendered per play

We are 20th in 3rd down percentage surrendered.

Compare us to the Steelers who are a good defense.

We had a total of 280 defensive plays versus the Steelers 259. Or about 5 less plays a game than us. In the only defensive stat that matters they are giving up 12.5 points a game and we are giving up 21.8 points.

    • Um, no, just no. Bills, Chiefs, Chargers, Ravens, Bengals, Texans, Eagles, Commanders are 8 teams that it's not even a debate, they aren't trading their QB for Purdy. Patriots, Broncos, Titans, Giants, Bears, Vikings, Falcons are 7 more teams with QBs drafted in the last 2 years that also would rather stick with them than trade for Purdy as they all have more upside than he does. Lions, Packers, Cowboys, Bucs are 4 more that would likely keep their QB's as well, age aside for Goff, Dak, and Baker. Panthers and Colts are two teams in the same situation, QB's who have both struggled and shown flashes to where the teams probably stick with them because they drafted them, but in a re-draft of all QB's, they probably take Purdy over the guy they currently have. Jags, Cardinals, Dolphins, are 3 more with QB's who probably have a higher upside than Purdy but come with their own question marks, so debatable if they'd take Purdy over who they already have. That leaves Jets, Raiders, Steelers, Browns, Saints, Seahawks, and Rams. Rams would take him over Stafford for the future of course, but not for 2025, and I'd think the Seahawks would take him over Darnold, but honestly not sure if they would take him over Milroe at this moment as they really like his potential and have him for 4 years really cheap. That leaves 5 teams that I see who would absolutely take him over their current situation right now, and a handful of others who MIGHT take him over their current guy, a far cry from your 20.
    • Agreed. Also as soon as they received the top pick in the next draft it was over. Bears won that trade. Gave up a top overall pick got one the next year plus pick 9, a couple 2nds, and DJ Moore a proven young WR. Had their 2024 pick from us be in the late teens or later it would be more debatable IMO.
    • Option A:  Pay your starting QB starting QB money. Option B:  Look for a starting QB for 4-10 years (or longer) while wasting the talent at every other position.    How many of the top 20 QB's do you think are worth what they are being paid?   When you factor in the last year of his present deal his contract is really an average of 45 million per year which in today's QB market is a very, very good deal. I wish we'd had found a Brock Purdy to pay 50+ million a year right after we parted ways with Cam.  Ya'll go ahead and live in fairy tale land where good to great (much less elite) QB's are available to pay. Just the fact that they had the chance to pay Brock after the disaster of trading up for Lance is a testament that when you find a quarter back you can win with, complete in the playoffs and superbowls with, you pay him.
