Potential Head Coaches

i wasn't going to go there, but i thought it. grimm is a HoFer as a player, beyond that it would be too similar. i wouldn't want grimm as an OC for sure. as a HC...i'm just not convinced at all that he would be a good one anymore than singletary is. he'd be more low key than singletary, but i just don't see either being great HC choices.

i respect the career as a player, but that doesn't make you a good head coach.

As far as Harbaugh is concerned, The panthers are probably way down on his list of future jobs. The word is that U of Mich. is going to fire the present coach, that's Harbaughs Alma Mater. U of Miami is already looking for a coach, as is Purdue. In the pros, the 49ers are rumored to be letting thier coach go.

Harbaugh would'nt even have to relocate for that move. But the biggest stumbling block to being a pro coach is he hasn't any pro coaching experience.

That's my opinion based on fact and rumors!

Although there are holes to be filled, there is some good talent on this team. Got to be attractive to a potential HC. I think the Panthers are an easy fix for a good coach. Especially if we get a franchise QB.

So, after a monday of too much work, I decided to look through this thread and do some reading as I'm watching Monday Night Football. Mr. Scot, the Cowher debate has convinced me he is quite the long shot to get here, so he's out of my top 6 at the least for now. Also, I wanted to finally make a list of coaches that are strong possible candidates and also ones I prefer. I wanted to get a really strong grasp at who I want so I don't end up changing my mind every week:

Sean McDermott - After a lot of back and forth between offense and defensive minded coaches, I am beginning to think it would be interesting to find a potentially damn solid defensive coach. It is iffy about him only being in Philly, but Johnson may have been a fantastic teacher to him and he's young. He's turned Stewart Bradley into quite a defensive weapon and I continue to be impressed with Philly's secondary.

He could really bring the best out of an already good defense. I also think a west coast approach can happen with him, which could actually be a great change of pace for us. I would want him (along with my #2) to bring in a really solid, experienced OC, which is possible with his strong relationships within the Philly organization dating a good ways back now and again, he's still young.

2 - Winston Moss - He has become a strong candidate for me because similar to McDermott, I think he can utilize our current defense really well, which of course has a solid core minus DT. Moss could additionally incorporate a rookie-young guy friendly wc offense (like McDermott) that can produce...of course depending on who he brings in. Green Bay has been improving as the year has gone on and had to make a lot of adjustments injury wise. Also, I'd like to add he has been able to develop a good mentality in defending passers like Rodgers from the Packer's practices and there's no doubt he has some familiarity with how that offense spreads the field and throws all over the place.

3 - Brian Schottenheimer - He has been at the bottom of my radar and slowly crept up. I feel he is the type that could give a really strong interview and get the attention of our FO. As it stands, from what I read and Mr. Scot's fine work, he would probably insert a 3-4, but I find that as a completely ok scenario given the talent we have a linebacker and the manner in which some DC's like Rivera have been able to transition between formations.

I just don't know if he'd be willing to come here and become a HC quite yet, but I like him, I like him alot

4 - Jim Harbaugh - I put him here because I honestly don't know how good of a chance we have in getting him. I have definitely been warming up to Harbaugh, but I'm just not ready to jump on his bandwagon. He could be a great coach, and I deep down want an offensive minded coach, but I really think he has a better shot at either staying at Stanford, going to Michigan, or SF. He would be a tremendous mentor for a young QB in Carolina no doubt.

5 - Ray Horton - This choice comes in because 1) There will most likely be a position coach on our short list 2) He's more likely than Butler happening

I know the argument that the Steelers have a system-coach type atmosphere can be a legitimate claim, but I don't see why Horton won't be a solid potential coach.

6 - Perry Fewell - He has been rising on my list because of two factors: 1) I like the fact he rallied the Bills a couple years ago and 2) He has the Giants playing very well this year, especially with defensive half time adjustments, particularly beginning with the Bears-Giants game earlier this season. I don't know how willing we'd be to hiring another Giant coordinator though

So that's where I'm at. I think I've finally been convinced Cowher is a far reach. I'm nervous about what Grimm stuff may develop, but in the end, I just don't think he'll interview well. Harbaugh may end up leaping up towards the end of the year, but again, I'm hesitant until he issues some sort of statement about coming to the NFL, along with Luck for that matter.

Also, I have been really pushing for Heimerdinger, but with his cancer, that makes him pretty much out of reach unless it was more contained and not the fast spreading type.

I disagree personally, but I don't find either to be realistic head coach candidates right now for our job.

Twitter is blowing up with rumors of Gruden going to Univ of Miami... can anyone confirm this?

The more SanFran wins, the better the odds of us getting Harbaugh, if indeed that is who JR and Hurney want. Harbaugh could potentially go down the coast to the 49ers unless they continue winning thus saving Singletary's job.
