same coaches, new scheme

It seemed our Defense was good in the beginning of the season as we've mentioned before.

But from what I understand it was pretty vanilla and it was very basic. But, we got it done with the young guys, and taking the "thinking" out of the Scheme's and just playing ball.

I wonder what we'll do to get back to that. I mean, yeah, I know it's pretty basic and all that fun stuff. I'm not a person that breaks down plays, but I know that our Defense was against the run and that pass early in the season, and whatever changed ended up being the down fall of our Defense this season. (IMO)

trgo made the defensive playbook very simple and the players loved it and it worked.

i have been wondering what they changed mid season, did trgo start bringing in the complicated crap again? did he think that his new players had caught on enough that they could understand what he was doing? did fox think it was too simple?

what happened? i just don't understand why we are trying to use the same people to do the same thing and expect it to be different.

the most brilliant ideas are worthless if you don't have the ability to implement them. trgo's defense doesn't work here. it might work somewhere else. maybe he should go somewhere else to see. I know i won't get in his way.

How about less questioning the schemes as much and be more concerned with attitude and motivation. The last game, our team looked flat. Even the best scheme would get torched with players that aren't motivated enough to run them. It is up to the coach to instill that hunger and that passion and that is my biggest concern.

Motivation on the field can and should come from Beason and Harris. Trgovac needs to put them in a position to succeed by calling schemes that shut down the opposing defense. They need to execute to make it happen. I think we get a lot of that--look at how many three-and-outs we manage. But, be it poor execution of an overly complex play or just the wrong call, when we miss we tend to miss in bunches and teams march on us. I think there's a little of both in that. It just doesn't seem like we see too many opposing drives where they get a first down and then have to punt in their next series.

Trgovac was very aggressive in 04 through 06, but sometime in 06 we started playing a lot softer, and that's continued to this season. I kind of wonder if that didn't start because Minter was getting exposed as having lost a step, and since then we haven't had that veteran leadership back there. If that's the case, Harris is going to be in his third year and Godfrey won't be a rookie any more. I'm holding out hope that it is, they're ready, and we're back to blitzing with regularity.

I think you have a valid point. (Too bad everyone else is too interested in being the biggest smartass to realize it. :() We haven't had solid safety play since Minter began to slow down. Now we have Harris back there and Godfrey seems to be ready to step into place. With a full year under his belt and plenty of time this spring and summer to really study film and learn from his mistakes, Godfrey will make huge strides.

Also, perhaps Lucas isn't as bad as he seemed late in the year. I remember back in '04, about halfway through the season Minter said that he would miss assignments because he was trying to cover for the young guys in the defensive backfield. When Trgo/Fox simplified the defense and Minter decided to trust Gamble and Branch, they really got better and won 6 of their last 8 (and one of the losses was in OT at Atlanta.) If Lucas learns to trust Godfrey and, in turn plays his assignments like he's supposed to, our secondary should be much better. (Which should result in more coverage sacks, INTs, and big, spectacular, bone-jarring hits.)

All I want for Christmas is press coverage. Beyond that, I think things will take care of themselves. More players to rush the passer, and why not? We have quite possibly one of the best, and most athletic group of linebackers in the league. Godfrey seems to have the ability to be a rover as well. He's got skills.

    • Does this mean only topics from within the last year or any topics with posts from the last year? i.e. if there are any old threads we feel should be kept around for whatever reasons, would a bump of that thread before the update ensure it's kept around in full or do the posts from more than a year old still disappear?
    • I'm more intrigued at him becoming our future LG. There were some people who thought he was better suited to be a guard in the NFL to begin with.  Then if Freeling ends up being a legit LT, moving Ickey to LG could give us an incredibly strong left side of our OL for years to come. Ickey has only played on the Left side his whole career, both in college and the NFL, so I just wonder if keeping him on the left side, even if shifting inside, would be better than putting him outside on the right side. Just hoping him growing up a Panthers fan will make him want to stay here and move positions than enter FA so he can stay at LT somewhere else, particularly since LT is the big money position on the OL, so he likely can get paid more by someone else to play LT than play LG or RT here for us.
