I think it's time to say... Steve Smith isn't elite anymore.

I can accept that he's not what he once was. No longer elite, though? Not sure I buy that.

He's suffered as much from lack of a complementary threat as anything (plus Delhomme's 2009 nosedive).

Yes, he's older, and yes, he's gotten injury prone. But if I'm an opposing DC, I'm still putting a lot of time into preparing for him.

Smith has had everything that could possibly go against his numbers happen. Every WR in the top 10 since Smitty's career began has had above average to elite QB play. If not that then they have had better WR cores, yet Smith still delivered. The problem is that the offense has been entirely figured out with bad QB play, except for last Sunday. Give the guy a fuggin break, he would have had 1000 yds last season if he didn't break his arm. No one has a right to judge him right now.

If he isn't elite then why are teams constantly doubling him?

I mean, there are at least five NFL DCs that disagree with you, we have faced them all and they all doubled Smith... and I bet there are 10 more lined up ready to take the same stance when we play the remainder of our schedule.

When he quits getting doubled and doesnt make teams pay for it... then we'll talk.

    • I know I’m grasping at straws but I believe this is our ‘get right week’.   Fug them dirty birds, panthers eat this weekend. Lesgo.
    • I’m guessing Canales will want to try and establish the run early. Atlanta knows that if they stop our run game, Bryce and these WRs aren’t going to win the game on their own so they’ll be keying on the run and likely have the personnel and scheme to be successful. The run game won’t work early. Atlanta will get out to a 10-0 or 10-3 lead.  Canales will then go back to the pass game with Bryce dropping back 3/4 of all plays. In that scenario we lose the turnover battle. -2 is my guess.  Past is prologue with this team.  Atlanta will get their run game going and can just as easily beat us through the air if not. Sorry, but Carolina is not competent enough to beat a good Falcons team.  We trail throughout the entire game.   Atlanta    10   7   7   3   27 Carolina   3   6   7   3   19
    • Yeah, I don't think it would. Might want to review the tape on the past two preseasons with him. The game I saw there was a massive gulf between him and Kyle Allen. Hence why he got cut.
