Charles Godfrey

Calling NFL caliber athletes pussies is childish at best.

Safties aren't supposed to be taking on a RB one on one at the goal line. That's a breakdown in the front 7. It shouldn't be up to him to make that tackle. If your safeties are the first guys touching the RB then your defense 100% failed that play and you will get gashed: see Lions @ Panthers 2008.

Expecting him to get the better of any RB with a full head of steam is unrealistic. With the way the D-line has been playing it's amazing that they haven't been blown out every single game. Give the back 7 some defensive tackles and people will be signing his praises.

There isn't anything to interpret about that play. Godfrey squared up and at least tried to take him down. It's obvious through how he finished that he did not want to take on a RB at full stride. But he at least tried, I don't know how many players are going go 110% for a lame duck coach on a 1-9 football team.

Godfrey is catching way too much flak. He's played poorly but calling him soft and a pussy is way too far. People need to act like adults.

If you play any level of football on defense you are going to get trucked, it's a fact. There are many things to pick on Godfrey for but that play isn't one of them. Many DBs (Cromartie in the playoffs) would half ass it and whiff, at least he stuck his nose in there during a meaningless game.

Hell, even Merriman got blown up by MJD, is he a pussy?

I love how everyone on this board acts like Godfrey is the worst player on this team. How bout those DT's that are never in on any play? Huh? Godfrey is incredibly inconsistent yes, but he has improved and still could be a great safety in the league. It would be great if we tried him at corner at the end of this year if we lose Marshall then move Pugh to starting safety.

Oh come on now. I saw Ed Johnson make a great tackle and he was only about 5 yards off the line of scrimmage. That's much better than Hayden who's normally about 6 or 7.

what is funny is Godfrey has started every game he has been healthy for what will be 3 seasons........

......and Chris Gamble was benched today b/c of performance.

yea what was up with that? I felt like he has been playing better than Marshall all year long

the problem with Godfrey is inconsistency. the guy makes a good play or two each game but then gives it totally away by taking bad angles on the run or totally failing to cover the TE. He gives up to many big plays by taking terrible angles. The question is if this is due to poor ability or poor coaching?

Godfrey is a decent hitter and can get to the ball at times but his coverage skill and the angles he takes have hurt this team. If he is better coached this may be solved idk. Trust me i am as frustrated with him as anyone on the entire team.

    • His footwork has been discussed many times over related to not just within the pocket but the quality of his drop backs and how while his receivers have been an issue his own footwork has created issues with his receivers. It is a mutual give and take dynamic after all. As far as his deep passing goes I will happily admit I saw some very impressive long throws from Bryce later in the season and I said so at the time and I'm still saying so now. That doesn't mean that there still aren't issues and beyond some instances of him flat out missing receivers deep that he knows he needs to get corrected I think there are still some throws to the sideline that defenses are going to test Bryce on early and often and until he can prove he can beat defenses on those throws consistently they will play him the same way. As far as talk of Bryce being top ten and the metrics that define that different people are going to have different answers and I've said before after the conclusion of the 2024 season that I'm going to try to put yardage aside in some cases and just focus on what Bryce is doing both between the 20's moving the ball and how our redzone scoring percentage is looking. The biggest thing I'm looking for this season is scoring points. Not just field goals. Touchdowns. If the offense is moving consistently and reaching the end zone more often than not and not squandering drives and settling for field goals then I am going to be content for the time being. I do not expect miracles this season. I expect development competiveness and both sides of the ball particularly the offensive given the investments we've made trending upward. And no blowout losses. I don't think that's an unreasonable ask do you agree? 🫡
    • It's also worth noting that Cam himself said that he felt safer when running vs. sitting in the pocket because he could see the contact coming and could better prepare for it. A QB running the ball doesn't have to be a sledgehammer. He just has to be effective.
    • That Falcons game is about as good as it gets. Especially on the road. I know the Falcons defense was bad but he was cooking with Coker, an undrafted rookie get the bulk of the receptions. If your QB has 5 TDs and 0 turnovers he is playing like a top QB, yardage be damned. The big question for me is how consistently can be play the whole season?  I don’t expect a game like that every week, but I also don’t want to see any performances like the pre benching or that Cowboys game (which was bad post benching). Bryce’s best shot at being the guy is becoming a mini-Burrow who is about as consistent as you can get at the QB position.  The good news is this QB class should be a fun one. So hopefully Bryce becomes the guy, if not it’s a nice class to let DC pick his QB and they should come into a great situation with a good OL, RB, young talented WRs etc…
