What are the chances Kyle Orton touches Free Agency?

But we need Andrew Luck. LOL seriously, I think one young QB to develop is enough we need a VET QB that can teach Clausen something and trade down if we are picking 1st to someone who is desperate for a franchise QB. I mean you look around the league and as always about a half dozen teams could use a upgrade at QB.

1. Minnesota - Mr. T Jackson really the guy?

2. San Fran - Is the Alex Smith experiment over? How good is Troy Smith?

3. Seattle - Is Charlie "TD Jesus" Whitehurst the answer?

4. Jacksonville - If LA comes calling is David G. gonna put butts in the seats?

5. Washington - McNabb is pretty damn good but how many years does he have left?

Will any of these teams be willing to leapfrog the Bengals, Cardinals or yes Buffalo (who is still proclaiming Fitzpatrick as the answer) to get the top prize of the draft?

I will say this now if the new coaching staff fall in love with Luck they will not bother to acquire a top FA QB. It's simple economics you don't pay a number 1 QB to sit on the bench or pay for a decent FA vet to hold a clipboard and mentor. So all the Lady Luck people need to realize they can not have it both ways.

we are desperate for a franchise QB and those teams you listed are on my list of teams to trade clausen to.

i'm also not saying that we need/should bring in a top QB from FA....not that there are any i would call that. there is no one coming available who is worth a starting gig and worth not drafting luck for.

someone like hasslebeck or pennington would be great in that role. same with bulger.

I can almost guarantee you we sign a veteran out of FA this offseason. Nobody within the organization will likely want to go into next season with the same youth at the QB position that we had this season, and with the increasing possibility that Luck doesnt come out, I could really see us making a move via trade to bring in a proven commodity this offseason. even if we decide to go the FA route, I think the FO will want someone proven, even if Luck is here. I don't think the asking price on a guy like Orton will be incredibly high, and we do have some trade bait.
if anything, the likelihood of luck coming out has been increasing throughout the year.

again, there will not be any proven vet WRs hitting the market this year who would be worth building a team/offense around and that would make us not want to take the best QB available in the draft. there are some who could come in and help with development, but beyond that it is pretty sparce.

if we're in a position to do it, draft luck, trade clausen.

FWIW, I don't expect McDaniels to be coaching in Denver next year, but I would think the new coach would want to keep Orton over The Golden Calf of Bristol most likely.
it would make sense. he's under contract till '14. that gives The Golden Calf of Bristol plenty of time to develop if he's going to.

I disagree entirely that the likelihood of Luck coning out has increased. The CBA is more than likely not going to get resolved-if at all-until after the Super Bowl. Way after the deadline for college players to declare for the Draft. We're going to see a lot of underclassmen returning to school for another year simply because they don't want to risk having to sit around for a year doing nothing.

it's better than going back and getting hurt or seeing your stock plummet like locker's has.

the iron is never going to be hotter than it is now for luck. i mean it could be just as hot after this year, but why would you want to risk it? he is all but 100% assured of the #1 pick in the draft this year. is that something he can bank on the following year? he'll get paid one way or the other. so what if he has to wait a year (which won't be the case). he'll still be the starter and he'll still get a huge contract. there is no benefit to him waiting.

i don't know what the chances are, but i think bringing in a FA veteran, or even trading for a decent one, is a huge priority - even if we draft Luck. this season has shown more than any other that veteran leadership at the QB position is absolutely critical for the development of rookie QBs and for the team as a whole.

if we got kyle orton i would be thrilled.

I know we all think Carolina is an awesome place to play football but what good FA QB wants to play here?

A 1-15 rebuilding team with a new coach, new backfield, new receivers, etc and playing in the toughest division in football so chances at the playoffs are tough each year.

Why not go to Seattle, San Fran, AZ, Denver, Oakland etc where .500 gets you into the playoffs and the weapons are just as nice, if not better?
