"Are you blowing smoke up my ass?"

This phrase......is one of the most confusing ever in the history of the english language.

Could you actually imagine, someone blowing smoke up your ass? Its un-real. Like imagine someone spreading you out, inhaling smoke, putting the lips on the wrinkles of your butt, and blowing smoke up there. wtf. would it have a "caprisun" like effect? where you blow into a straw and juice sprays everywhere?

Also, why would this disgusting, odd phrase have the meaning it does? Why would blowing smoke up your ass mean your kidding me?

"did you really win the lottery or are you just blowing smoke up my ass?"

What the fug!? Who comes up with this poo!?

*goes to write standup comedy skit on said material*

2 origins that i found:

Tobacco Smoke Enema (1750-1810)

The tobacco enema was used to infuse tobacco smoke into a patient’s rectum for various medical purposes, primarily the resuscitation of drowning victims. A rectal tube inserted into the anus was connected to a fumigator and bellows that forced the smoke towards the rectum. The warmth of the smoke was thought to promote respiration, but doubts about the credibility of tobacco enemas led to its disappearance and the popular phrase “blow smoke up one’s ass.”

EW

and this one:

The phrase "blowing smoke", meaning to deceive and/or distract, has been around for years. The "up ones ass" part is a fairly new addition. The origin of the "blowing smoke" part is from stage magic, where magicians use smoke to hide their actions or to distract the audience. So if your actions were meant to distract or deceive, you were said to be blowing smoke. Of course, anyone who studies American slang knows that pretty much any phrase can be improved by adding a reference to someones ass, so I suppose it's inevitable the that is where the smoke would eventually be blown.

Thank you, Henne. I've just finished pitching my show to the History Channel. In it, my team [of cheaply hired yet mildly attractive late 20-early 30 something actors] investigate the origins of phrases, sayings, and idioms, and test whether they are "true" or not. You'll be seeing me next fall. In episode 3 we will, in fact, be testing the validity of smoke enemas.

Please investigate "couldn't pull a greasy string out of a cat's ass"

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
