So, it has apparently taken me this long to realize that I have this problem...

We do a garden too, Started out doing it on the deck in buckets like Inimicus. Now its like 20' x 40' on our side yard I plant things we love to eat.

One thing about eating new foods is keep trying them cooked in different ways, don't just eat it once and say fug that just because you don't like it. You could eat the same things you normally do but just revamp it. Instead of eating beef burgers eat turkey burgers. Bake, broil or grill instead of fry. Chicken tenders rolled in seasoned panko crumbs and baked are better than the frozen & fried stuff imo. Try baking sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes. Switch to whole grain bread.

I'm lazy too! One thing I like to do is to spend a few hours one day prepping food to eat for the week. I slice veggies, cook some ground turkey, grill a couple pounds of chicken breasts.

I use those things I prepped to make meals with during the week. Add a little taco seasoning to the ground turkey and have a taco salad or tacos. Make a big Caesar salad and add the grilled chicken I made. You can do the same thing with the chicken tenders rolled in panko, just freeze them and take out how much you want later when you want to cook them.

I have learned that I like veggies a lot better if they're raw or barely cooked. I like them still crunchy.

It will be hard at first for you but just bite the bullet and do it anyway. Don't give up. You'll eventually notice things will start tasting better, you will feel better and you'll wonder why you ever ate the way you once did. It will make a huge difference in your life I promise. But if you don't do it for your self at least do it for your wife and kid, they will want you not dead and around for the future.

I forgot,

When was the last time you had allergy testing? I used to be allergic to some things as a kid and teen but I'm not anymore. But I'm allergic to things now that I used to not be allergic to.

Some of the foods you're eating could be causing some of your allergies. Believe it or not.

very true about food allergies. whenever people are sick and can't shake them the first thing I always ask is what are you eating? they invariably go, the same thing I always eat. then i look at them and go ahh, see what I mean?

read a great book years ago about the circadian rhythmn and the effects of diet and sleeping. fascinating stuff

Here's something you can do to help you eat better.

Before you go into the restaurant, or the kitchen say this simple phrase:

"I will no longer eat like a spoiled, eight-year old kid."

And try everything. Our tastebuds change as we get older as do our needs. And, if you can eat something four times, you'll end up liking it, no matter what you felt about it before.

I used to be that way...I still am sort of. My problem isn't that I won't eat healthy food because I'll eat pretty much anything...I'm just too lazy to make it because I'm a single guy and usually eat alone. Cooking for one is tough and you usually just want to make something quick and easy...which doesn't tend to be healthy.

I could make a list of things I don't like and it's very small...

Raw Tomatoes (my vice...I can't eat them for some reason...sandwiches or whatever)

Arugula = YUCK

That's about it...haha

So I realized something that made me change...If other people eat it, it's gotta be good, or else why would they eat it? That and I was tired of being embarassed at dinners with friends and family when I wouldn't eat the same things they did. It really is embarassing and I do believe "you are what you eat". I started with green beans and carrots as the first vegetables I ate. I noticed I could eat carrots in soup and green beans if they had a little pepper on them. Just find the ways it can taste good to you, because there is a way!

It's nothing you can't change...the biggest effect you can have on your life is what you eat and how active you are. Can really change how you feel and your life as a result. Good luck man, it's a great first step realizing your issue and wanting to change it.

I was in the same boat as you a year ago. I was feeling like poo, went to the doctor to only find out I was diabetic. Dr said with good diet, exercise, etc. I could eventually go off my meds. I cut out sugar all together (splenda is awesome), drink more water, and cut down on portions. I have lost around 50 pounds.

However, I am trying to eat healthier now. Especially since I was liberated earlier this year (ex wife was worthless in the kitchen and we always ate fast foods), I am cooking a lot myself now. I just invested in a crock pot on Black Friday and the damn thing is awesome! I made this chicken chilli stuff the other day and it was awesome. Had boneless chicken breast, corn, black beans, rotel tomatoes (habenero ones), taco seasoning, green peppers, and onions. All I did was rinse everything, throw in the crock the night before, cut it on low the next morning before work, came home, used fork to shred the chicken, and enjoyed. I used to hate just about everything that was in it, but now I like them.

I used to be the same way too... lots of junk and no veggies. Once I got in the gym back in the late 90's that started to change and I started cutting out a lot of the crap and eating better. It's amazing how much better you feel and how much better your digestive system works. I don't eat as good as I should, but I eat way better than I used to.

If not for this stupid shoulder, I would have been in the gym 6 days a week for the past three years. Since I hurt it I haven't been as much as I should have... but as soon as it's fixed, I'm getting back in there.
