Cheating

But that's an absolute statement :sosp:

To be clear, the gunner example isn't hypothetical. I saw it happen, and it was in a Panther game.

(not telling which team did it though) :D

yes.. you are correct.. lol just like "killing people" is most of the time a negative thing..

but as to my statement.. generally, I do feel the ends justify the means.. that isn't a bad thing in my opinion, and also that doesn't mean it's always true..

Ha you guys are funny.

This is an exercise in semantics. "Cheating" is much too broad of a term and implies some sort of morality argument. What we are discussing here is simple cost benefit.

Is a helmet to helmet hit "cheating?"

Is a holding call "cheating?"

Is filming the other team's practice "cheating?"

Is steroid use "cheating?"

No these are all rules infractions with various punishments.

Do some teams encourage dirty hits? Do some guys poke you in the eyes in the scrum? Do some guys push off because they think they can get away with it?

There is a fine balance of what you can and can't do in the NFL and it is defined by NFL rules. I reject any arguments of "cheating is wrong" because its all cheating. Where you happen to draw the line is arbitrary, subjective and useless.

uhh, little bit too many shades there. there's quite a large difference between filming another team practicing and, in the course of a game, holding someone so they don't destroy your QB, or going low while a receiver falls and hitting em in the head.

there are things that are bad sportsmanship, there are things that give a player a totally unfair advantage, and there are things that happen to be often ambiguous and/or done to protect the health of players. biiig difference between the two in my mind. certain actions call fall within one or more of those categories and others and easily be defined as "cheating."

i do not see how filming another team practicing is not cheating...

NO NO NO NO

In order to create a credible product, the league must establish a standard set of rules and apply them as uniformly as possible across the league, not just between 2 teams on the field. The credibility of that product is shot as soon as the fans believe that records, individual and team, are manipulated. What you suggest is that the league has its part time officials orchestrating an entire season at worst, or having significant impact on outcomes at best. They certainly miss calls, maor eoften than desired, but there is no way they would intentionally ignore calls. That would not be good for the game.

If every infraction was called or there was even intent to call every infraction we would just be wrapping up with Super Bowl XVI

..if we were lucky

    • Bryce hasn’t played well enough to justify that sort of extension. If the organization wants to roll with him at QB moving forward, any extension they offer should be commensurate with his play. For “passable” QB play (however you want to define that…I use the term generally to mean that he’s a game manager that you can win with if you build the rest of the team right but that he’s going to limit your ceiling and potentially lose you some games here and there; I do not think he‘s “the guy.”), the going rate is going to be a lot lower. Something more in the 3 years 45 million range. And if Young thinks he can get more elsewhere, then he’s free to try to do so.    Whether that would be an OK decision depends entirely on the answer to the premise of this thread. Do you think you can meaningfully improve on Young? If the answer is no, whether yet be due to lack of attractive options in the draft or free agency and no one willing to trade a good QB for a decent price, then I don’t have a problem with rolling with Bryce (sans 5th year extension and/or with a reasonable contract) and taking some late in the draft flyers and exploring worse options (but better than Dalton) in free agency.  Paying less for a QB does allow for the flexibility to build strength elsewhere on the roster, and then you hope you can upgrade from Bryce later.
    • No .  He got paid and is rich now.  not saying that is it 100% but it wouldn't be the first time we have seen something similar happen to not so hungry players.
