Question about Big Cat and what pundits are saying

Glazer, and several others I have heard, all say Jerry is going cheap and will NOT bring in a big name coach and may not pay top free agents.

My question is -are they basing that soley on 2010?

Hasn't Jerry written the big checks before 2010? Didn't we just pay Peppers 15 miliion or something for 1 year trying to win?George Seifert, Sean Gilbert, and a list of free agents.

I just don't recall Jerry ever being referred to as a cheap owner before this year. We all know he is a leader for the owners and the CBA played a huge roll this year. But why do all the pundits seem to think the cheap Jerry is here to stay, even post CBA stuff???

Why would we believe after the CBA is settled, Jerry's willigness to write the check, and committment to winning will be any less than before the 2010 season?

JR has said he will spend to bring the team back. I expect him to be sensible about it, which mostly means locking up the vast majority of our big name players and filling gaps where needed with quality FAs where the price is right.

However, the national media would have actually had to listen to him saying that in order to know it. Since he didn't come out and make a big statement on ESPN, they likely don't care.

JR has also not been an outrageous spender in recent years.

They have no idea what they're talking about, so they skim over some pretty sketchy facts, and then base all of their opinions on that.

I would listen more to the people who are involved with Carolina. People from the Observer, even Darin Gantt and some of the others.

Yes no reason to believe he will not spend sensibly as he has done in previous years. As mav says, don't expect him to throw bad money at flashy free agents but rather make smart moves.

The only thing may be that he has set himself up as a thrifty example to the other owners and he may continue to do so at least until the new CBA is signed. Which means he may go cheap on the coach.

Doesn't mean he can't get a good one.

I will be pissed if we go cheap for a coach. And least some of the national media seems to think we are going to go cheap. You can make a case for not signing players because of the CBA, lockout, etc. You can even make a case for not signing a Cowher because he wants too much power as opposed to money. But, if they do not make a serious run at Harbaugh and just go cheap, I will be pissed and JR will have turned into Shinn.

Jim Harbaugh? Your thoughts on where he ends up.

Pat Kirwan, NFL.com

Joe, I keep hearing the Universitty of Michigan. Only he knows what his QB, Andrew Luck, is going to do. He knows all about the NFL from his playing days and from his brother. If I were him, I'd head to Carolina and draft Luck. they have a good offensive line, good running backs, and an underrated defense.

I'll be watching that game very closely tonight.

Man, I'm gonna tell you guys something and I want you to remember this and take it to heart.

If your friends dare you to eat a bunch of hot wings and wash 'em down with a capful of Milk o Magnesia, then they are not your friends and do not do it.

hey there pat thanks for answering questions.. so what do you think the next biggest change will be in san francisco? getting harbaugh or finding that GM? can the 49ers have any success next season? thanks adam

Pat Kirwan, NFL.com

Hi Adam. I believe they will hire the GM from within the organization. I'll be interested to see if they get Jim Harbaugh -- I suspect they may not. Jim must look at San Francisco as a team without a QB, and he knows they can't get Luck if Luck comes out. I would think what's needed in San Francisco, with a rookie GM, is an experienced veteran head coach -- someone like Brian Billick. No time for the learning curve of how this thing works. Look what happened in Denver when they hired an inexperienced coach and an inexperienced GM.

    • He is a great guy but a horrible reporter. He makes my skin crawl when I hear his name. I heard that babies cry and dogs attack him when he enters a room. Other than that he is a good dude. Now go burn in hades u sum bit.
    • The job just really passed him by. He came up when basically you just needed to get three or four quotes, toss a couple of team provided stats in there, and stretch it out to column length. you got your copy in by 330, out the door by 4, then chill/shmooze the rest of the day. If you were really good you got a book deal. Every now and then you got to write an editorial. The goal of the profession was like Peter King where ostensibly you’re a beat writer for whomever but you get paid to just shoot the poo. now it’s a 24 hour job, you’ve gotta be social media savvy, the pace has increased substantially, you’re expected to produce more than ever, you gotta be able to look through bullshit etc. there’s still risk of industry capture where you just become a mouth piece. Sheena Quick is obviously shameless. I don’t think Newton ever aspired to be more than an inoffensive beat writer, but even that relatively simple role was just more than he was cut out for. its even worse when you’re covering a team that expects the Fourth Estate to act as a PR extension, or considers them on par with buying Twitter bots to promote Bryce. there were over thirty papers that covered the panthers first training camp. In that environment there’s room for boring guys like newton, and they may even be incentivized to push the boundary a little. But today that just isn’t the case and most of the guys are hanging on until retirement (person, gantt) or they’re good and gonna be matched up like Jordan. im not defending the current state of sports journalism, just saying that what counts as a meat and potatoes beat writer passed newton by. He’s retiring well past his sell by date, but that’s pretty common for his generation in general.
