Why stick with Jimmy Clausen?

I just don't think you can give up on a guy like that.

It's not a matter of giving up. It's a matter of trusting him to be "the guy". You just can't do it. He can come back and compete for the starting spot but no way do we not address the QB position with some serious competition.

QB position is way too unstable right now, Clausen isn't enough.

Hopefully Lombardi doesn't know what he is talking about but this is what he said on nfl.com today:

» The Panthers are on the clock with the first pick in the 2011 draft (order for top 20 picks of 2011 NFL Draft). There are indications coming from Carolina that the organization will not draft a quarterback and rely on Jimmy Clausen next season. …

Right now, I'd be willing to go along with that.

With that being said, I'll stand by my argument that if Luck isn't there, I think we need to do other things with the number 1 pick. So that leaves free agency as an option for us to address the Quarterback position.

I'd still rather have Jake back, but on the subject, the offense was horrible, injuries and coaches, Jimmy didn't help either, but I think he could turn out to be a Mark Sanchez kind of player if anything.

based on what? Mark Sanchez plays nothing like Jimmy. Mark is more of the mold of a Matt Moore/Jake Delhomme style QB.

he was a 2nd-round pick, so cutting him would be the worst idea...a trade would not bring a 2nd-rounder back, 4th-rounder would be more realistic.

it's plain and simple: you dont know whether luck really pans out as a starter from day one or not...clausen was also considered as nfl-ready and so on.

the worst idea is hanging onto bad players simply b/c you drafted them imo.

That would be a terrible mistake.

Jimmy really needs someone to push him. He just doesn't seem to show "it" right now. Perhaps with some competition he could, but I doubt it.

I think releasing him is not a good idea right now but it is an option depending on the coach and what happens in the draft and FA. I would personally rather see us find a reason to keep him since I think Moore is gone, and have him and Luck backed up by a proven vet to mentor them.

He actually started to play like he had some balls yesterday. Little too late though.

Totally agree. He actually made some throws downfield and looked like he tried to stay in the pocket. Poor little guy has no arm strength and will struggle to find playing time for the rest of his career. If ANYBODY really thinks he will be competing for a starting spot is going to be sorely disappointed. They hang on to him for emergency purposes only.
