Do You Trust Hurney?

Recommended Posts

I've read in several places, this being one, that Hurney isn't under contract and hasn't been for awhile. If that is, in fact, the case, why or how can anyone trust him to put the best interests of this team at the forefront when said team isn't even paying the guy?

Seriously, the guy looked like he'd just finished going 10 rounds with Tyson during the presser the other day. He looks more stressed than a 16-year old girl going on her first date.

As much as we saw no change in the offense from Henning to Davidson and then attributed that to John Fox and his offensive philosophy, how are we to be sure the same won't happen with the next head coach being another Fox... and we end up attributing that to Marty Hurney?

Why did some teams that needed a QB pass on Clausen twice last season? Because they did their homework. Hurney didn't spend much time researching Clausen because he never figured to be our pick. The big Cat told him to stop trading first round selections for second round picks when Everett Brown got off to a slow start and Otah was limping around the facility all the time (theory, of course). JR basically stated as much when he made his comment about the first round pick this year--it was aimed, in part, at Marty. Since Golden Tate is the only WR taken between our pick in round 2and round 3, it is my belief that we were targeting Lafell as a second rounder. He was the most Moose-like WR in the draft, and he was replacing Moose.

The Armanti Trade: Remember that Hurney tried to trade up with the Rams after the first round and did not strike a deal. That suggests that Hurney did not have the golden first rounder in 2011 to dangle, so the Rams declined. Now consider that move:

1) Hurney probably would have traded our #1 in 2011 (as he had done the previous 2 drafts) to move up to draft Jimmy Clausen. In hindsight, he would have traded Andrew Luck for the right to move up 13 spots in the second round of the 2010 draft. However, since JR did not approve it, Hurney could not offer enough for the Rams to bite.

2) Clausen free falls into the middle of the second round and we jump on him. Marty thinks, "I was trying to dangle a package of draft picks to move up to get him, so I can use the picks I saved to jump on Armanti Edwards. He and Fox had been to Boone and they saw something in him that told them to draft a kid projected by many mocks to go undrafted or in the last two rounds. Even though this draft was without a first rounder and was going to be called upon to make an immediate impact, he drafted an undersized, small college project and expected him to learn the Wildcat, learn to return punts and kicks, and learn WR at a professional level. Really? We needed players for now.

3) Desperated for DT, we knew we weren't getting free agents and out bargain bin, often injured DTs were not good. What do we do in the 4th round? Draft a 3-4 OLB. Norwood would never have fit the Fox defense, so basically, we drafted a special teamer.

4) We do not have a 5th rounder because we traded if for a DT we were about to cut.

5) The sixth round is Hurney's saving grace. Gettis and Hardy stepped up to bail Hurney. Both played like first or second rounders this season. Pike was there, and they had Pike in for workouts several times. I think had we not drafted Clausen in the second round, we would have drafted Lafell then. I also think that Pike would have been our 3rd rounder. These two were targeted (Hurney's post draft words) heavily by the Panthers. Wow. That would have been a train wreck.

This is why I don't trust hurney. Spending first rounders because you need to win now (contract not extended). I found it interesting that JR answered the question about the first round pick and deferred coaching search questions to Hurney. JR wanted an impact player. You don't get them by trading first round picks for second round players. But the reason I don't trust Hurney is due to what he TRIED to do and did in last year's draft.

I realize that this is conjecture, but I don't have time to present the details that would tie this theory together. Remember, this is how I feel and my reasons for feeling that way. I have to guess and assume things that happen behind closed doors but rest assured, things happen behind closed doors that would amaze you.

Some of you still don't get it.

The tone of the teamisset by JR.

Hurney is responsible for finding staff that fit that tone.

If you don't like running the ball with a tough defense, find a different team to cheer for.

I still don't mind Hurney. He's a heck of a cap magician. Say what you will, but we've got a future number 1 pick who's going to try to take us to the cleaners before the NFL implements a rookie scale. This is a high risk year, and I'd rather have an established cap guru at the helm rather than some fresh face just so we can feel like we have a clean slate.

I dont trust anybody in the FO right now.
ditto.

i don't trust that richardson has the panthers best interest at heart.

i don't trust that hurney knows what the crap he's doing, esp. in regards to a coaching hire. all DCs? seriously? fewell is a serious candidate? lol. what a joke.

i wouldn't blame luck for staying at stanford or pulling an eli manning, not that hurney would be smart enough to draft him in the first place. he'll probably stick with clausen again and draft a position that we don't need nearly as much as QB, esp. if the guy is a local product because he thinks that players from around the carolinas will fill seats.

That was a look of disbelief in that Jerry is running the show and it makes him uncomfortable.

The Big Cat may be like your grandfather at an assisted living center where you make him think that he is in charge when he really isn't. Behind close doors Hurney and Morrison tell him that he is in charge, but clean up his screw ups. In public they pray that he does not say anything dumb and do there best to put on a happy face while hiding their grimaces.:D

Since I'm from North Carolina, been here all my life, and there are no other NFL teams representing NC. Then I will always pull for the Panthers. I can still bitch about the way they run things. BORING ASS OFFENSE and a bend but dont break defensive. No wonder Patriots win all the time, b/c they run up the score and dont give two shits about it. You think the panthers would run the score up on other teams? I think not.

How has Hurney addressed the tough defense tone when DT has been basically ignored for 3 years and was desperately needed this season while drafting 2 QBs and 3 WRs? My beef is that he is not finding staff that fits that tone.
