Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

Cam Newton, the Heisman trophy winner, has led Auburn to the SEC Championship Title, the BCS Championship game and Auburn to the #1 BCS ranking.

They have played some of the toughest teams in Division 1 NCAA Football, and at times were dominant. Much of this was Cam. Here's the stats.

Passing:

Completions - 165, Attempts - 246, Percent - 67.1, Yards 2589, TDs - 28, Int - 6.

But it doesn't stop there.

Rushing:

Attempts - 242, Yards - 1409, Yds per Attempt - 5.8, TD - 20

Yes, there were some NCAA eligibility issues. But it's been investigated, and anything that was pinned on him was dismissed. Besides, who cares?!? College sports has it's own set of priorities.

What possible reason do any of you have for not wanting him to play for us?

Of the major QB prospects, he plays in the simplest offense of all. It's going to be a huge adjustment having to do so many things pre and post-snap that he didn't have to do in college at all.

That said, I wouldn't mind if we took him. He or Green are our best bets. But let's not kid ourselves like he doesn't have weaknesses.

spread offense

character issues

doesn't play under center

only started 1 season

run first pass second

just a few reasons there. all legitimate reasons not to take him number 1. no one knows how he would do under center but he does have good footwork in the pocket. also, he might not even declare for the draft too, he might go back to auburn for another year.

The question about Newton is whether he will have the patience to stay in the pocket and throw the ball with the accuracy that is necessary to be a stater in the NFL. Running QBs may get you to the brink, but can they win championships? There is a risk to drafting a running QB. You may lose out on a sure thing at another position.

I'm going to guess they fear of spread offense stats and the controversy...But I've seen enough of him to see he could help turn this franchise around; would also give a reason for the national media to pay attention(they tried with clausen but the suckage stopped that train).

I'd take Newton at first if he comes out(another guy we have to wait to see if they declare >.<)...

I'd rather see YOU justify why he IS worth #1 overall. Looks like you're going almost strictly off of his stats. Stats for college quarterbacks are not a good way to evaluate them, not at all. Look at guys like Colt Brennan. Those goofy offenses they run can make even the worst quarterbacks put up huge stats.

Seems to me a #1 pick should be something a little better than a 'project' with 'upside.'

    • I really like the way this team is trending. Morgan and Canales rookie campaign saw them do some questionable picks but, they also did some really good things. Especially addressing the offensive line.  Young had such a disastrous rookie season where his confidence was nowhere to be seen.  You can attribute part of this to a terrible offensive line.  So, we focused on the O-line.   We then brought in several defensive free agents that were supposed to compliment Brown.  Once Brown went down those players could not hold the line.  2025 we focused on defense in Free Agency and brought in several good players.  We then added more talent in the draft.  I think we have competition in several areas where Vets are not guaranteed to be starters.  Our offensive line is pretty set with some good backups.  Our defensive line is going to be a war for who comes out to be the starters.  All in All, we are leaps and bounds much better than 2023 roster.  Canales made some rookie head coach mistakes but grew as the season progressed.  He got our QB, who was starting to look like a huge bust, playing with confidence and poise.  Now it appears Young is moving upwards.  Maybe he is a QB whisperer.  After Young started to play better our offense was fun to watch.  Morgan knows football and knows what he wants in his players.  It appears to me that not only are these players he's drafted really good and got great value for them, but they are also high motor, intense players. Our defense, in the past, was always the key to our success.  I think Morgan is building a great defense. I know it is too soon to tell but I believe we may have a tandem that will be around a long time.  It would be nice to see Morgan/Canales be in the same class as Lynch/Shanahan and Beane/McDermott.   I know many Huddlers will overreact, but I truly believe we have a tandem that will be around a long time. TIME WILL TELL. Go Panthers
    • I am actually really excited about this kid. One thing that really jumped off watching his highlights was he almost is too fast or almost over pursues. You can get away with that stuff in college but the NFL these guys are stronger and more "slippery".  Little things that can be corrected but he seems to have a motor which is always a plus!
    • Many teams looked at the drop-off as a reason not to select him in the first round.  Going into the 2024 season he was listed as a potential first round pick.  Morgan, IMO, based our pick on what he did in 2023 and expects him to play at the weight he played at Purdue. Morgan did this twice in this draft.  Scourton and Evans.  saw one stat on Evans that he had 58 ypg in one of his previous seasons.  Plus Notre Dame has a history of good TEs that can catch and block. Canales will 3 good TEs that all will see time on the field.
