Justify why Cam Newton isn't worth #1 overall?

I don't know why people compared him to them. I think you could just as well compare him to any other big bust QB with character issues coming out of college of the last decade or so... and there have been plenty of pasty white dudes too.

I don't want to get my hopes up for someone who has no shot getting here is all... and I kinda feel like he doesn't.

We'll see - anything is possible.

they have been doing it because they are lazy and don't want to think beyond color lines. same thing for black people who have their eyes fixed on him only because he's black.

he's the best and most talented player in college right now and there is no reason why that talent and success can't translate to the pros.

and character issues...i'd be much more concerned about mallett than newton. the stuff that people are knocking newton for is pretty lame.

I don't really understand this logic.

Well, so far Cam Newton has been caught cheating at Florida, stealing laptops, and been caught up in a pay-to-play scandal. Now, while none of those things are criminal (well, technically that's not true. Stealing is a crime, but before the trial he took a "pre-trial class" to clear his name, so the trial was thrown out), they are seriously frowned upon, by not just the fans, but the alumni who are paying the way through the college. Cam Newton has already shown that he doesn't want to follow a few simple rules. They're not even hard rules to follow

No, it has nothing to do with the fact that he's black (I've been an advocate of Patrick Peterson's for two years), it has everything with to do with the fact that the guy can't follow basic instruction now.

First off, i agree with this. it's not hard to follow the rules in college, yet, he couldnt, caught stealing a laptop is just a dumb thing to do. and how will he act when he has 80 million dollars??? As for the fact that it has nothing to do with him being black, i wish people wouldnt play the race card whenever you are criticizing a player, i am a fan of Vince Young and would like him in Washington. i just am critcizing Newton for his issues and he's had them, he's got work to do, i wouldnt start him in 2011.

this isn't a thread about mallett.

a lot of his success won't translate to the NFL. Honestly, his rushing will be greatly decreased. however, I think he has the arm to make up for that.

I really want to see him beat Oregon with his arm, not his legs. IMO, he has shown that ability already, but to see him do it on that big a stage would increase his chances of landing here.

I think Newton is probably the only player other than Luck that will really excite fans here, or at least draw a lot of discussion :P

didnt sam bradford play in a spread offense in the nfl as well?

tom brady plays in one now.

i'm not saying that newton should keep playing in a spread, but he should play in a pistol offense. he would be amazing in it and our run game would still be incredible.

Sam Bradford's spread offense though didnt have him doing designed runs. Cam Newton's spread offense was more like The Golden Calf of Bristol's spread offense. Newton ran the ball ALOT, i seen some games where he ran 12 or more times, in the pros, he wont be able to do that.

agreed he has shown the ability, but can he not run the ball 10 or more times, if (in the National title game) i see him run more than 10 times, that will turn me off on him still because i just cant see that working in the NFL, i said the same thing about The Golden Calf of Bristol and in time, The Golden Calf of Bristol will not run like he is doing and will have to pass from the pocket and The Golden Calf of Bristol is working hard at doing that. Newton will have to do the same, look to pass first and if all your recievers are covered and you have to run, then run, but dont look at Smith, see him covered then take off like i think he might do if he starts here on day one.

You really think JR would put the future of his franchise in the hands of a thief. I don't think so-

he bought a laptop that he didn't know was stolen. that doesn't make him a thief. that makes him a kid that made a dumb mistake.

    • I have more faith in XL improving than I do in Tmac being a true number 1 recuever
    • Round 1. TMac arguably the best WR in the draft Round 2. Scour ton mentioned as a possible 1st round edge.     Texas A&M did not use him the same way Purdue did. After the 2023 season he was listed as a first round grade. I believe had Texas A&M used him like they did at Purdue he never makes it out of round 1. Round 3 Princely Umanmielen, we'll go by Princely.  Another highly graded player we got in a lower round. As the video suggests, even if he plays only on passing down it's a positive. Give him a couple of years to develop a he could be a three down player.  Round 4a Etienne IMO a huge upgrade over Blackshear. I can see him in a similar role as CMC without the heavy workload. He can run in between the tackles and has some shifty moves. Give Canales some flexibility. A fellow huddler pointed out UGA running backs don't see the field if they cannot pick up the blitz. Really good pick. Round 4b Ransom a hard hitting safety that has played three different positions on defense. Great pick Round 5a Cam Jackson a massive NT in round 5. I believe a solid rotational pick in a lower round. We added a beast that could make offenses quiver when he's lined up with Brown. Great Value  Round 5b Evans This is another player that can block and has good hands. He also had better seasons before 2024. As a rookie he's probably leaps and bounds better than Ian Thomas. I think he gives us a three headed monster at TE.  Round 6 Horn Jr. Many believe he's just going to be a KR/PR player. I believe there are going to be packages for him to get on the field as a WR. His speed with TMac and Thielen in the slot could be special. I'm really looking forward to seeing him in training camp. I've watched some film and he is very explosive.  Overall I love our picks. I honestly believe all of them will contribute this season. I don't believe we reached on one player in this draft.  This weekend we get a small look at these rookies
    • You joke, but hasn't basically the whole team been in Charlotte this past week together? I'm not one to see the random dumb stuff players put out on social media in the offseason and think it means that's ALL they've been doing and not working on their game.  But it's a little strange that all this is coming out at the same time we're seeing tons of stuff with the team in Charlotte together, even if it's just working out and not even official team OTA's or anything. So he gets a pass from me saying anything now, but if he doesn't show clear improvement this season, it then opens him up to some retroactive criticism for some things.
