Justify why Andrew Luck is/was worth the #1 pick

After reading the entire thread about why Cam Newton is or isn't worth the #1 pick I was pretty frustrated. I didn't really see many legit reasons besides character issues, amount of time playing in college, and the type of offense he ran. The rest just turned to racism and flaming of one another.

So why was Luck worth the #1 to so many. It seemed as if most people blindly jumped on the luck bandwagon. I mean a ton of things said about why Newton is not worth the pick apply to Luck. Only difference is that everyone in the media had luck going as the number 1. I would love to hear what some people have to say on this matter.

...complete package?

good arm, tremendous accuracy, awesome decision making, great feet, good command of the pocket, amazing leadership, NO character issues?

thanks. you just made me feel even worse.

edit: forgot, played in a pro-style offense, incredibly smart, prepares hard for every game...

Why, well, one is he has a great arm with power and accuracy. Second, he's VERY smart (he plays for Stanford) and his dad was a former quarterback, so he learned from him. Third, people wont notice or seem to care about this one, BUT he can also run and he doenst run too soon. Hard to find many bad things on his game.

Luck and Newton both kind of had 1 hit wonder types of years. I guess Luck and possibly Newton if he does not declare for the NFL, Will get to prove it next season.

I was wondering when someone would post this. I did drink the Luck cool aid, but I did wonder about that. My bet is Luck's status will drop significantly with him playing again next year at Stanford.

    • I see Bryce's development this way: He improved when his supporting cast improved.  TMac and Dowdle saved his arse last year, but in fairness, most good QBs have good WRs and good RBs--and good OLs.   The 2025 OL underperformed, actually. They were above average, but they should have been elite if you consider the salary cap.   As soon as we signed Lewis and Hunt, I started thinking, "That's not sustainable.  With Ickey about to get paid a LT salary, Moton and Hunt grabbling $50m per season combined, and Lewis around $17m--that would be nearly $100m and the Center just walked.  Yikes.  What does that mean?  Rico walks, Mays walks, and we do not have a top 5 WR on a second contract.  We do not have an elite TE, and only 1 is on a modest second contract. And now Bryce will demand $50m for his incremental rise to mediocrity?   So when we sign Bryce, we will get weaker at other positions.  Hunt, Moton, maybe Ickey and Lewis, will all be casualties--that is the right move regardless (not sure yet about Ickey, but he was not elite) Bryce is one lucky, entitled camper.  No competition since being drafted, and he lost his job for a while to the aging clipboard holder.  Now we are bringing in UDFAs and busts to compete with him.
    • Probably not.  If we are taking a QB, it would be a prospect to replace Bryce and not a flyer type player.  I can't say for sure, but I doubt he would have cracked the top 3-4 QBs even if he were to play this coming season.
    • The Giants, Cardinals  and Dolphins should have moved on, but they didn't and ended up cutting their QB early into a monster second contract and had to eat a TON of dead cap money.
