Best Player Available Strategy

Panthers have always followed this. What makes people think that they all of a sudden will draft out of necessity? You could argue that they drafted out of necessity last year, and thus far hasn't worked out so well. Curious to hear others' thoughts. Fairley and AJ makes more sense out of necessity, but most boards have Bowers rated as a more pro ready player.

Scouts Inc has Bowers, Fairley, Petersen and Green all graded at 97... so if the Panthers have these guys all graded the same then need is the tie-breaker, right?

BPA--do you mean the best potential or the best college player?

BPA= Bowers if based on potential--possibly Quinn, who is rumored to have once run a 4.38 40.

BPA= Fairley if based on college performance when compared to others at his postition

BPA= Peterson if based on versatility (returner, can play CB or S) and freakish athleticism

BPA= Green if based on potential, rarity of skill set, and offensive need

We haven't always gone with BPA, for the first few years we drafted for need. We saw more of the BPA with picks like Connor, who was going into a log jam when we had much more important needs to fill. It has served us well when we have done it, however, and I think it's the best strategy to use.

that's based on Quinn not playing his last year... that doesn't speak to his actually skill/talent.

Well, Hardy has more of a traditional 4-3 DE frame. He's quick, but he's bigger. Like 270 lbs, right? I read yesterday that Quinn is like 255. He'll need to bulk up a bit to play 4-3 DE.

So, he's just like Hardy.

I know it isn't very popular with the fan base, but some of our best drafts have been when we drafted best player available. Arguably, the Panthers started drafting out of necessity when we took Brown and definitely last year. You could say that the past two years we haven't drafted as well as we normally do.

As a result, I have a feeling that Hurney will go back to what has worked - BPA.

so your saying armanti and clausen were the best players available?

More or less, yea. However Jimmah was considered BPA by far at 2nd, but he surprised most with how bad he played. I still think last year's draft was pretty good. The only failures, IMO, were Jimmah (which no one reasonably could have predicted) and the trade for Armanti (huge fail). Lafell, Gettis, and Hardy were GREAT pickups and the other low picks (Pike, Stanford, Pugh) were low risk, medium reward types - no big loss even if they amount to nothing.
