HOLY CRAP! We drafted who???

i liked the pick at the time, BUT i honestly wanted the OTHER USC reciever in Steve Smith so we could annoy announcers.
I had the same thought back then.
Everyone is going to laugh at this one, but I'm going to man up and eat some serious crow. (Maybe somebody already stated this draft pick, I haven't read all of the posts)

I was angry when the Panthers picked up DeAngelo. Considering that Fox was a ground and pound guy and we needed to replace Stephen Davis, I was thinking it would be best if the Panthers picked up LenDale White.:hat:

Just from seeing all of White's highlights with Reggie Bush, I was completely convinced this was a no brainer. So when the Panthers selected D-Lo, I was thinking "Who in the world is this!?!" Then they showed his size and the college team he played for, and I once again found myself thinking "Why did they get this Barry Sanders wannabe when they could have had a powerful, fast RB with White?"

And now here we are, forty-two hundred rushing yards (averaging 5 yards a carry) and over 30 touchdowns later, and I couldn't be more relieved that I was very wrong. Plus, we got a true powerful back in Stewart a couple of years later.

I happen to remember the debate about White. I was clearly against picking him up because I thought he was going to be too lazy and fat.

I've yet to have a complete total wtf moment. You guys just get too locked in with your projections.

Rashard Anderson had to be one. I think we took Jason Peter and I got pissed. But I think you are right. However, don't tell me that you haven't had a WTF moment when we didn't draft A DT last year but drafted 3 cornerbacks, 2/3 Quarterbacks, 3 wide receivers, and a 3-4 OLB last year.

I get surprised, but on moves, not really on who we draft. When we traded to get Otah, that surprised me, but not the pick itself. The draft is just an opportunity to get talent, half of the first rounders are busts and it's even worse beyond that. The only stable way to draft is BPA all day. Don't ask if you should draft Andre Johnson or Warren Sapp, just get the guy that has the biggest chance of being a solid starter because the chances are stacked against you. So in short, no I was not really surprised last year because I knew the FO was just going with the top guy on their board every pick. I got surprised that we traded a 2nd to grab Armanti, but once again, that's because of the move, not because of the pick.

I thought Charles Johnson 3rd round was totally unnecessary.

I thought Chris Gamble was WAY too high.

I thought Hilee was going to be the hometown guy that made to the next level.

I thought Everette Brown was an extreme stretch to pick a guy that undersized (we'll see on that one...)

I thought Mike Goodson pick was redundant and absolutely not needed.

However, I knew Kalil was gonna be the poo and was extreme value at that pick.

I thought Lafell was a great pick (we'll see how that turns out)

I didn't understand the J-Stew pick at all, but thought he was going to be a great power RB.

Idk, maybe I'm not good at figuring out Panther draft picks. I also had thought Jarrett was going to show up his first/second/third year...

i laughed at that prick clausen as he plummeted down the draft boards and wondered what stupid team was going to end up drafting him. when they announced he was the panthers pick, i screamed. i was pissed.

i honestly tried to feel good about it and did for a while. i argued with people on these boards that we needed to get him going when moore turned into jake, jr. his first couple games, i really thought i would be seeing some improvement. any improvement. i saw nothing. i made excuses, but i got over it. he sucked. not just rookie sucked. he just sucked.

sooooo.....i'm back to my initial reaction. i hated the pick then as much as i do now.

fwiw, this was the only pick the panthers made that i felt like that.

Trading away a first round pick in the following years draft to move up in the second to select Brown. Two years in a row without a first round pick, and for the cost of a high second. Makes no sense. Also the Edwards trade, trade away a second to move up in the third to draft a project. I know he could turn out to be a talented player in a couple of years but I'm sure everyone agree's that pick would be nice to have this year.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
