Dean Smith frequently benched players when he thought their egos were taking over the game.

And all of the stars you mentioned showed out much better in the NBA  than their college careers might have indicated

And John Wooden.

Oh no he benched 18 yr olds sometimes. Not sure what more you would want those stars to do in college, Worthy, Jordan, Jamison all won NPOY. 2 won nattys. And again it was a completely different era than now. Dean Smith was seen as a very progressive and empowering coach for his players at the time. Stars and big time recruits wanted to play for him and benefited from playing for him. Can you be more clear or admit that you were wrong because comparing Dean to Rod just makes no sense with the reasons you’ve given and you just come off as a dook or state fan that wanted to take a shot at Dean Smith for seemingly no reason.

And what does And John Wooden mean? He was already a well established coach and starting his run when Dean Smith was just getting started coaching. But hey if your criteria is that a coach is either Wooden and anything less than 10 titles is the same as Rod then you do you.

Elite players dont fit Rods system. Rod has hit his ceiling. We arent going further.

You say this but don’t acknowledge the reality that Florida beat us with a similar style.  Except their power play is basically trying to get garbage goals.

You have given up on Rod and that’s fine.  But where are the teams that are doing so much better?  Oh yeah there’s only 2 of them right now and they’re in the finals.

Toronto wouldve waxed us as well, possibly Dallas. Its 7 years of this and the year before we had a much better team and same results.

Yeah I get some of the frustration with the conference finals record, however there’s also not many coaches consistently getting to the conference finals. If you want to fire Rod you better be able to get a clear upgrade as a replacement and there are so few of those in the world and of those who is available? I think the bigger problem is the back to back mid season trades without having a solid plan in place for retaining those players.

Stop taking it as some personal affront. I don't care about UNC, Duke or State. I'm simply stating that Dean Smith did not tolerate nor want a "superstar" on his team. He believed in team play and that nobody is above the team.

The Canes will not attract a 100-point scorer because RBA doesn't short shift lines to keep Aho on the ice, like we've seen the Oilers do with Draisaitl and McJesus- both with around 30 minutes in regulation time. It's one reason Aho may never see a 100-point season, because he won't get the ice-time to do it.

Glad your back!

Orlovs replacement is on the roster his name is Nikishin!

Everything else i agree with.

I'd love Ekblad RHD is what we need.

Yeah, I'm not back for sure, just lurking during the off-season. Can't post anything someone may disagree with without it being taken as some personal attack.

Anyway, yeah, Nikishin will be on the 2nd pair with Burns. RBA's exit presser really sounded like Burns will move down to the 2nd line.

Jake Guentzel was a pretty elite  player and he fit us very well. And we’ve only had two offensive elite forwards under Rod. That’s Jake and Miko. Sample size is pretty small and I feel like your arguments biased. We are going to get an elite player or two In the off-season, we can be the judge of that this time next year.

I agree, I think the right elite that's not a diva could blend right in - I wish we kept Guentzel

Yep!  Jake wanted to stay. It’s been reported a lot that he did. Tulsky waited too long to give him that contract.

Rumor came out today that the Canes are going to offer Marner 14m AAV over 7.

Sure, why not add another high-priced player who disappears in the post season. He'll fit right in!

I'll take Mikael Granlund at C and Nikolaj Ehlers at LW, thanks.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
