I think this move has two parts. It openly shows their desire and intention to keep both players around during a period where they are not writing new contracts. Secondly, on the off chance that these RFA's still exist in the same capacity in the new CBA they are already in place on the two players that they wanted them on.

According to Gantt it could extend to ALL of our FA's that fall under the rule.

THe 2010 change to the RTA rule was considered an inducement to sign a CBA before it expired. And it is still being used that way. Once the new CBA is in place the RTA rule will revert back to 3 or 4 years especially if there is a rookie cap.

Pretty sure Marshall is gone no matter what. He doesn't want to be here, and near the end of the season reports from Gantt and Reed suggest the FO won't put up much of a fight.

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney would not comment on the process, but multiple team and league sources said the intent is clear. The Panthers will tag Johnson and Williams and a number of other players before the March 3 deadline to provide themselves some degree of cover until more is known about the economic landscape of the league.

Why not? It keeps these players from appearing unrestricted free agents and teams are not going to start fighting each other over players before a CBA is reached. Even if it doesn't mean anything it buys the panthers time.
