BREAKiNG NEWS: Panthers interested in trading for Trey Hendrickson

Another game of chicken from the Bengals I think more than anything. Russinni reported the asking price is a 1st rounder and a young defensive player. They're never getting that.

Throw in three bad teams as the interested parties (Browns, Colts, us)...maybe not, but I feel like the Bengals are just playing media games and saying hey we'll trade you to a bad team if you don't agree to what we want.

If he is eventually traded, can't imagine they get anything other than a 3rd rounder and a young defensive player who's on the bubble of being cut anyway.

The only two reasons why I think this situation might turn out differently is because 1) the Bengals have a rep of being one of the stingiest teams in the league and 2) they have an absurd percentage of their cap tied up in their QB and two WRs.

I honestly thought they were in a situation where they had to let Higgins walk or tag and trade. I guess they just don't care that Burrow gets the hell beat out of him behind a shoddy OL every year and they can't stop anybody on D. Take away Hendrickson and I don't think they'd be as abysmal as we were last year on D but they might be close. They really are just completely bungling their window with a top 5 QB and probably the #1 WR in the league.

I honestly think they could be worse than our D last year without Hendrickson. Their offense is good enough to score 30+ points most games, so opposing offenses aren't going to be able to run the clock out like a good amount of teams did to us last year.

Yeah, I considered that. It's possible.

I don't think they would honestly be AS bad but the results could be for the very reason you state. I shudder to think what our D would've given up if our opponents thought they had to try to outscore us in shootouts.

We absolutely should try to trade for Hendrickson.

We have plenty of cap, and I can't imagine the deal will be longer than 3 years.

We're saving a ton on QB and most of the skill positions.

Invest in the lines. Pass rush is definitely the biggest concern on this defense right now.

The normal goofs who secretly root for this team to be bad are against it, but anybody who actually supports this team and wants to win knows this would be a great move.

Exactly we have Bryce on a rookie contract. Hendrickson’s a badass and a legit pass rusher elevates the whole D and team

And we have to figure out if Bryce is our future.

This is the big thing. I feel like we're stuck in limbo on trading any future picks until Bryce proves he's the franchise. If he comes out and does that this year? We can be a little more Les Snead and say fug them picks when it comes to difference makers.

But until then? All of our better picks have to be held onto.

This. If there's an opportunity to trade a late round pick for a decent veteran bandaid, fine. Late round picks are basically scratch off lottery tickets. But trading premium assets for an aging big money player? That's the exact sort of thing we have absolutely no business doing right now.

I see a lot of Scott Fitterer acolytes popping their heads up for this non-story.

We ArE oNlY oNe PlAyEr AwAy!!!!

Meanwhile, trading away draft capital and making roster decisions that make us worse.

Hendrickson makes very little sense at the price he wants and at the price the Bungles claim to want.

That's a speed run to being yet another bad roster for a few offseasons.

Yep. I would've thought that watching a series of knee jerk desperation bandaid approach moves in recent years resulting in losing season after losing season would have eventually sunk in that's not the way to drag yourself out of the gutter. If we were a a playoff team who thought Hendrickson was the piece we needed to become a legit contender, sure. That's the type of team that a move like that would make all the sense in the word for. It makes absolutely no sense for a team that has more question marks than answers though.

It's not just him, we have Ikey coming up on potentially a big contract too. We already hitched ourselves financially to one player with massive availability issues as it is.

So do we want to be the team that has a 30+ year old $35+ mil AAV pass rusher with potentially a $20+ mil AAV LT and maybe $45+ mil AAV QB, as well??

Until we get some of those things figured out, now is not the "throwing caution to the wind" portion of building. That's putting a roof on after you just poured the foundation.

Yeah, I know the Panthers are acting like they definitely have the answers in Icky and Bryce but based on what I've seen out of them on the field I need to see a lot more out of them before I'm convinced they're worth the cap crippling contracts those positions demand. You can't pay a road grading LT who struggles in pass protection franchise LT money. And we're honestly still trying to figure out if Bryce is a legit starter much less a franchise QB.

    • McDaniels is out as Dolphins HC
    • Several of those guys you listed are upgrades over Bryce and several more are potential upgrades.  There will be other starting(or former) QB's coming available too(Geno Smith, Kyler Murray, Kirk Cousins, etc). Or there are backups that can clearly be upgrades(Mac Jones, Jacoby Brissett, Davis Mills, etc). Now, how realistic any of these options are is questionable. For any of the acquisition options, price would be a big factor. For any of the older veterans their motivation for even wanting to come to a team like this is pretty questionable. That extends to several other FA candidates, as well. Are we operating in a therotical world where Bryce is still here and presumed to be the starter? That is going to eliminate some options. Are we operating in a theoretical world where it is a "competition" and Bryce is still here? Or is Bryce gone completely? Those are all factors that make various of these scenarios both more and less "realistic." But, if the question is can we upgrade over Bryce? There is no question we can do so through free agency or potentially the draft.
    • The whole “pick up the fifth year but also bring in competition” is the weirdest take. you only pick up the fifth if he’s the guy. You don’t bring in someone to “push” him if you think he’s it. throwing a seventh or whatever at a project isn’t relevant either way.
