  1. 1. Where does Bryce rank on the all-time draft bust list?

    • The biggest draft bust in the history of the NFL, considering the assets and picks we gave up to draft him.

Again, I think it’s important to consider Gilbert was a solid, serviceable player for many years.  Russell and Leaf were serviceable while they played.  Not great.  Bryce is not serviceable.  Bryce is not average.  There was a stat at some point prior to that end of season stretch last year that said he was statistically the worst passer in the history of the league with the amount of starts he’s logged.

I think it was something like the lowest true YPA and EPA with a clean pocket.

Sounds right.  And yet, we have people still searching for any reason why he is bad that isn’t Bryce Young himself.

I think Kyle Orton may still hold the trophy for worst long-ish term starter of all time but he definitely rivals him.

I will argue that, in recent memory, Trey Lance is worse. The 49ers gave up 3 fuging first rounders to a guy who had a dozen starts or some poo prior to the NFL. Its just that the 49ers are leagues better overall as an NFL organization compared to Tepper's neverending shitshow.

Like how they drafted a QB in the 7th round even though they gave up all of that for Lance?  You know.  Because QBs don't always work out.

I would trade Bryce for Trey Lance right now straight up.

Honestly it depends on your definition of bust.

I think there is an argument to be made that he's not even Top 2 since 2021, and that's coming from one of the bigger anti Bryce people here since before we even drafted him.

I think Zack Wilson and Trey Lance both had more pre-draft hype than Bryce did, maybe by a wide margin, and both of them ended up turning out even worse than Bryce has.

Plus the 49ers gave up almost as much as we did for Bryce to take an unproven raw D2 QB who hadn't played in a year because Covid shut that level of football down.  While the Jets turned down all sorts of big offers to take Wilson as well.

We made Bryce a bust by making the trade and then taking him, despite him not being liked by many analysts for the same reasons that was clear to so many of us fans.  It was widely talked about being a bad QB draft, so much so that the Bears stuck with Justin Fields for another year and traded away the #1 pick because of it.

So as bad as Bryce has been, I honestly don't think he ranks near the top of the all time busts list, mainly because I think people forget he wasn't some can't miss prospect and we're the idiots who made a bad trade to take him to make it just look worse.

Trey is the backup QB for SD, Zack Wilson is the backup for Miami.

I don't think BY is even a NFL caliber back up.

That doesn't necessarily make him a bigger bust

Look, I'm not remotely defending Bryce, my history here has proven that I'm anything but a fan.  But I think people forget the hype around Wilson and Lance vs the amount of non hype there was around Bryce except for a few small number of people.

That alone is why I just can't get to where I rank Bryce with those all time bust labels.  Even guys like Russell and Leaf had supreme amount of pre-draft hype around them, levels Bryce never reached in the lead up to that draft.

Gilbert was 2 1sts for a decent starting DT.  A bad deal but I can't see how its rationally worse than this.

well he hadn't played in a year because jesus told him to hold out for more money. a lot of people forget that.

he absolutely had a longer panthers career than Bryce will

What are you talking about? <edit: I'm confusing him with someone else> didn't even go first overall, and if you believe Bill Polian he was never even an option.

Everyone knew Jamarcus was a huge bust risk, and everyone knew if he went to Oakland is was going to be a disaster. The only reason he was taken was because Al Davis was senile. That was a terrible draft for QBs and basically everyone else in the first round is a hall of famer. I mean the only other qb taken in the first round was brady quinn

Bryce has had INSANE amounts of hype since he first arrived at Alabama. Almost every single one of his games was on primetime during his college career. Unlike Leaf, he actually won the heisman, and a whole bunch of other awards. He's probably the most popular bama qb in the modern era. One of the reason so many in the media are still hanging on to the Bryce hope is how wrong all of them were about him, and he doesn't give them a convenient hand waive excuse like Leaf or Jamarcus.

    • I agree with you in theory.  In practice the ACC doesn't gain anything by crapping on Notre Dame. This year, the ACC was the benefactor of NC State, Syracuse, Pitt, and Miami being on Prime Time linear (which is still massive compared to streaming) network TV BECAUSE of Notre Dame.  You could maybe argue that Miami could get on Prime Time anyways because of who they are, but they were in the opening weekend ONLY game on SUNDAY mostly because they were playing Notre Dame.  I work with a ton of dipsh*ts, and self-absorbed assholes in entertainment, and while I'd love to tell them to fug off, I realize the reward is worth the tolerance needed to reap it. I think the ACC is in the same boat with Notre Dame.  The last thing you want to do is piss off Notre Dame and have them take their ball, go home, and call the Big 10 to be their new "friends". Then every ACC game is on the CW Network, or the 11am kick on ESPNU.
    • I think Shough is playing well.  Kellen Moore knows how to develop/help a QB.  If Shough keeps this up the Saints might be able to pass on drafting one this year to give him another season.  He is an older rookie so he needs to play well fast and he appears to be doing so. The 4th quarter play was my point.  It doesn't change much but it happened to drop him below Bryce which you clearly aren't a fan of so you had to manipulate the data to make him higher and just look at starts vs season totals.  Regardless they are very close this year and you seem to think Shough is playing well... which means???
    • I mean, I often separated PJ Walker's starts vs his garbage time.  We generally edit out 2 games from Bryce when talking about him last year.  All depends what discussion you are having.  but if you are having an honesty discussion on Shough and how he is playing and start talking per game production.....a 0-2, 0 yard, 4th quarter technical appearance is going to massive distort his per game production given his limited playing time.  The OG goal of of this thread was a legit look at surprisingly play of our next opponent.  That's supposed to be normal football talk.   But most QBs indirectly make Bryce look bad and the stans can't have that.
