2023 Draft Recap

I have some hope that the 24 draft will eventually be seen as modestly successful by NFL standards.  Remember that the Michael Barrett pick ultimately netted us Michael Jackson.  I’m willing to give Morgan one more draft and offseason to prove himself. Unfortunately, Morgan carries the residual stench of Fitterer.  It’s hard to know for sure if Morgan was an accomplice to or hostage of Fitterer.

walterfootball and the huddle could draft better than this

Could be said for a lot of coaches here, but also as far as Evero goes...

  • Didn't develop DJ Johnson or Jammie Robinson
  • Trevin Wallace still has hope, but that's fading fast and Payton Wilson was on the board. So far, Wallace looks like depth/ST at best. Crumedy is a 53rd man on a bad roster.
  • Chau Smith-Wade has been solid
  • And this year...Canales has basically said to play the rookies, so we'll see. I have hopes for all the defensive rookies and think they've all shown promise. But...how much of that is actually *finally* drafting a good player vs. anything Evero did in a couple of months?

As far as offense goes? Whoof...might somehow be even worse.

Not just that, consider the picks we gave up in that draft --- brace yourselves:

R1 Jalen Carter DT (CHI traded 9 to PHI) - top starting DL in the league w/some screws loose

R2 (from the CMC trade) Brenton Strange TE - solid starting TE

R3 (original pick used for Matt Corral package) Marte Mapu LB - Developing depth/Vrabel loves him and he's making an impact at LB - Byron Young also went like a pick or so after this lol

R3 (from the DJJ package) Darnell Washington TE - developing but getting more playing time

R4 (DJJ package) Nick Herbig EDGE - a blooming EDGE defender for PIT.  Having a great season. 80%+ defensive snaps

R6 (Gilmore trade) Kayshon Boutte WR - was hyped, has had his moments.  Way more impactful than Mingo and others

This suggests that Canales has job security through next season.  A coach on the hot seat with a ‘win now’ mandate typically is not focused on player development.

I *think* he does though. Obviously until Tepper changes his mind or we end up 1-15, but I think Dave was told he has three years.

The part that kills me with that though, and maybe makes it untrue, if you have 3 years...why play scared? Why run on 3rd and 10s? If you don't trust Bryce, throw him to the wolves and let Tepper see he's the obvious problem...but play normal football instead of scared.

The whole operation is insane. For whatever reason, I still trust Morgan and Tillis for another year. But everybody else? Woof.

A++. Nailed every pick. Master class in drafting right here.

Let’s be honest here. This draft was so much worse when you realize how much we lost too. This draft was honestly a negative. We lost talent and picks.

So we got 0 long term effective starters and we lost:

2024 1st overall pick, 2024 2nd (CMC trade key pick), 2025 2nd and DJ Moore.

Oh, don’t forget the 2024 1st, 2025 1st and 2024 2nd that we decided wasn’t enough for Burns. That was 6-7 months before the 2023 draft.

Fitterer could not have fuged this team over any more than he did in a period of 7 months. 7 months to lose Burns, Moore and CMC, lose 5 potential 1st round picks and blow an entire draft. I hope he was getting paid by the Seahawks or China to fug us that bad.

We should never have hired Morgan. I don’t trust him at all. The right hand man to Fitterer that agreed with not trading Burns should not have been hired. Fitterer should also have been gone with Rhule.

The whole we should see how X does without Y so X deserves another year but us in the ass multiple times.
