Downfield Disparity

Josh Norris compares the downfield passing game from last year's down the stretch run to this year's first ten games.

So if we were able to do it with some effectiveness last year, why are we not even trying to do it this year? 🤔

Where is the disconnect?

I am not seeing that graphic. Can you upload it to the thread?

So the advanced metrics are saying Bryce is doing really well throwing deep, with his vaunted big time throw metric at 5th in the league and his adjusted completion percentage somehow at 7th (that's some big adjustment). And people wonder why advanced metrics get questioned.

We aren't throwing deep because Bryce doesn't take the opportunities. He is struggling with his reads. Other advanced stats show that, so...

Don't really follow analytics much, but I know what I see.

I would agree, regardless of rankings, that we had a better passing game last year than we do this year.

But if we're not even making the attempt now, is it Bryce, playcalling or something else?

Unhealthy OGs. Playing other bad teams early and having effective rushing attack. Playing from behind with a really bad defense last year while the other teams were in prevent/softer D.

Injuries on the OL would be a likely factor (Hunt is sorely missed).

They've been decent for the most part (especially on the left) but last game everything broke down.

Ding ding ding. He either reads it late, doesn't trust himself to throw with anticipation, or flat out doesn't trust himself to throw the ball more than 10 yards downfield. At the end of the day, throw it up to TMac and let him draw a flag or make a play. I'd rather see a 20+ yard arm punt than being scared on 3rd down.

Said it in one of the previous BY threads, but his "super power" of being a high processor, if true, is his biggest enemy IMO. He gets so far in his head he doesn't trust himself to just play. He played loose at the end of last year and the return was better. Now he's playing not to lose and is scared to death he's going to mess up...leading to messing up on top of his deficiencies already.

It took the leadership council two weeks to approve the change at running back.

mill of the gods grinds slowly etc

Still didn't look right last week...

I know, at least when healthy, we have a line that's much better suited to run blocking than pass blocking (wouldn't picture this crew in a typical WCO) but it sure didn't look like Canales was ready for a defensive approach that most of us have seen coming for weeks 😕

Bryce has no confidence on there WR outside of TMac, he’s costing the team with his lack of aggression. He needs to attempt deep throws even if they don’t amount to anything, give your WR a chance to make a play.

And yes the pass protection is also a problem, every time we attempt play action there’s instant pressure

    • Yeah lol well the interest isn’t really about seeking stimulation.  I wanted to see how actually bad it was.  And how much of it was women setting him up to be their cash cow.  That is the stuff that leveraged the Panthers into David Tepper’s hands. It is important in that sense.     The worst that I have heard is that he got them in the car and clumsily reached across to help them with their seat belt and made contact. With his arm. That was probably his big slick move. And I can almost guarantee he wasn’t rejected every time. It is easy to picture that action bringing his head close enough to the woman’s head to where he could go in for the kiss if he thought he got the green light.    I really don’t care if JR was a horn dog. We heard all our lives up until the last few years that one of the perks of being really old is that you can flirt with the young women and it is not just tolerated but expected. So he was keeping a tradition alive at some point 😂
    • Well I rubbed some dirt on it and am still here just not optimistic about the future of the QB position. Even what I had accepted as a ceiling raised to an acceptable level turned out to be a bit of a mirage, upon rewatch of the WC game.  Good plays were there yes, but some pretty bad ones too that the good ones late in the game kind of obscured. I have to downgrade that a little.  Especially after rewatching the last 4 plays. I remember the arguments about he did his job the WRs didn’t but that was really just that last muff by Coker I think it was on our final offensive play.   To the future: I know what my level is for paying him and recommitting, but I don’t have any confidence that the team shares my high bar.    But thanks for the pep talk
