So... The deep balls

Interesting how you keep posting these ridiculous comments.  He absolutely threw deep with great accuracy at Bama.  You don’t know what you are talking about as usual

Bama. Schmama.
Why didn’t he just seamlessly transition to making those same throws in the NFL?
I guess you will blame that on everything but your boy. As usual.

Has Bryce ever hit a dude deep in stride like he did today with XL? Im pretty sure thats the first time he's done it in 3 years. No its not a DC issue, in fact, the scheme and receiver play was great today. Receivers were running free all day.

No no the deep passes are coming, I swear, honestly, just give it more time

You sound like one of my patients in the ED for the fourth time this year telling me their abusive husband just needs more time and is ready to change

I didn't say he would, lol. I said if he could.

Look back at the end of last year - Same deal.

He shows up every few games and executes. Need consistency at QB and he hasn't been it.

I don't really think he nor the DC offense is going to be a consistent 20+ yard targeting offense. We just don't run that kind of offense. In fact, Bryce has never really been in an offense that strayed too far from basic West Coast principles in his NFL career.

So, the lack of deep targets can't really be placed completely on his shoulders. It's easy to individually blame him for missing reads deep, which he has over and over. But, I would wager that if you really broke down those "missed reads" in detail that the deep target misses wouldn't stand out statistically. Just a hunch, I have no details on that at all.

If he grows a foot and learns to make a second read he could be a starting caliber qb

He definitely went thru his progressions yesterday and it did pay off. Of course he still had his misses... But a great game overall.

Doesn't mean I want to hang onto him for what he's shown do far.

Do you think a check down is considered a read by nfl coaches

That depends on the factors involved. Quite a few of the shorter passes that we do throw the "check down" is one of the first 1-2 reads. One could argue that could be because of Bryce but that's really almost impossible for us to know without Dave Canales essentially telling us that directly.

I don't think deep in the fan sense matters much, honestly. I still think he needs to be able to consistently place passes well up to 20 yards and that's what is more critical. He did that yesterday - he was basically 7/11 on passes 15-25 yards and that's good enough that it also opens up passes all over the rest of the field. In week 10 he was 1/2 in that range; week 9 2/3 with an int; week 7 he was 0/4.

Anyway we need more of that... He needs to be stressing defenses past the sticks for us to open up the rest of the offense.

This is true. And there are def times where that rb out of the backfield is the primary read even, way more with Chuba.

that was not the case at all yesterday. Bryce was going PA one read, someone leaked out of the backfield, got to the flat, stood there, waved, looked at the mlb who was busy playing Pokémon go, then caught a pass.

Coryell and Walsh didn’t.

if you don’t know, they’re generally considered the architects of modern nfl offenses. They’ve written books. You can read them. Theyre not hard to find.

I haven’t read Gus malzahn’s book.

Bryce definitely has taken too many of them in his time at QB but there are times it's a good decision.

I don't really see the point in harping about check downs yesterday though.

    • I'm for whatever it takes to make him play like he belongs in the league.
    • lol no, sorry, but just no. Yes, I agree, an elite WR is more valuable than an RB, but CMC isn't a RB.  He's a true offensive weapon who is just different than almost any RB before him, he's legitimately the best pass catching RB of all time.  Having a player who can do what he does is way more valuable than any WR you can have, if you throw health concerns aside (and current age), there isn't a non QB offensive player in the entire NFL that I'd take before CMC if building a team for one season right now. CMC is looking at a first ballot HOF career, I don't care how good T-Mac looks, or how big of a fan you are of him (c'mon, just look at who is making this particular post), there is no logical way to make an argument at the moment that T-Mac has a chance at being a better player than CMC.   That's not to say he can't of course, anything can happen, but if T-Mac ends up a better player than CMC, than he's going to be a no brainer first ballot HOFer, which is just insane to predict for any player 11 games into their career, I don't care who they are or what they've done during said rookie season. If they re-did the 2017 draft, CMC actually moves up in the draft and would go 3rd or 4th after Mahomes, Garrett, and then I think there would actually be a possible debate of him vs TJ Watt.  Notably given your argument, he'd still for sure be drafted over Cooper Kupp.
