The "now it's been three years" Grade for the 2023 Draft

Or... maybe... Bryce isn't as bad as YOU think he is.

You don't watch the film knowing the plays and what everyone is supposed to be doing. How do you know someone didn't run the wrong route? Or get proper depth? Or read the hot? You don't. SO WEIRD to constantly be down on your QB. Even when he plays well, there's a but.

I guarantee you the Panthers will move on from Bryce Young if they don't think he can win a Super Bowl. As they should. But I'll trust the coach and GM with years of inside NFL experience.

You can say that about every player on the team. Its funny Bryce defenders have no problem throwing every other player under the bus, but when it comes to Bryce we have to trust the team.

Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.

1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.

GRADE: C -

2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL

GRADE: F

3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career.

GRADE: F

4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick

GRADE: C+

5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.

GRADE: F

OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F

What a shitty draft!

Moving up for Young was crippling, but then to spend 3 years getting him to mediocre and then if we are forced to pay him....yikes.

I can only hope that the NFL experts in the building see more than I do--to me, he can be decent.   We should want more from a #1 pic and we should learn when it is time to cast or lines or reel them in.

Quite possibly our worst draft ever...

My only argument for OP is that it shouldn't be an F, it should be an F---

I mean I can’t really argue with you. I’m an eternal optimist. So I gave it an F.

We really need to let the training wheels off of him this year and see what he can do. Call more deep routes and let's see if his mediocre arm strength can make those throws. I feel like it's a battle of is it the chicken (bryce can't throw deep) or the egg (Canales rarely calls plays with deep routes)... Bryce can still escape blame for not throwing it deep because we literally never have people run deep. Hopefully Brazzell gives us that extra deep ball threat to finally decide if its the chicken or the egg.

He called them when Andy was in there

I think I remember 1 deep ball from Dalton last year (in the Jets game to XL after Bryce got hurt). Before last season, I don't remember but Dalton's longest pass was 39 yards in 2024, so I can't imagine he threw it deep much (he somehow had a lower YPA than Bryce...)

Canales just likes to run a quick pass offense. Not sure if that's related to Bryce, the oline, or what, but it seems like he wants the ball out in 3 seconds or less.

What I want to see next year is more RPO. That playoff game against the Rams was the best Bryce looked last year and we looked at our best running the RPO slant to TMac.

He sure did.
I’m probably glad the play calling has been reassigned. We will have a comparison. Not that I am jumping for joy at Idzik being the guy but I’ll wait and see.

I mean I could look up my reactions after Bryce’s first game and not change that much for 80% of the ones over the whole years.

    • Pretty sure that a QB contract payday is all the competition any QB in this league needs, I don't think a competent backup is going to make them play any harder when the current situation wouldn't warrant the contract extension yet anyways. Your opening point in this post is also the problem, "Bryce has shown signs of improving", but that's still all he's shown, and he's only showing that because of just how bad he was to start his career. If he played like last season from the beginning and never improved one bit, then I actually think more fans would be ready to move on from him, which is what's weird.  It's like going from one of the biggest draft busts of all time into the 25th best QB in the league over 3 years means he deserves a long term $40+ million a year contract extension. Improvement shouldn't be the goal when the result of said improvement is still bottom of the league levels.
    • Yeah, but we've seen him do it. Just not often. I think that's the reason for the taller WRs. Would likely be a problem finding someone like Jimmy Horn in the mess.
    • And the Rams, Seattle, Patriots, Green Bay, Jaguars and the Bills who all made the playoffs and in case you forgot, Seattle and the Patriots played in the SB. By any measure, that's pretty brutal.
