That’s the point.  But he’ll still be under contract that year, so the rookie isn’t forced to start immediately.

When the boos come and the “Bench Bryce” chatter starts, it becomes obvious there is no new contract.

Yeah he would just be the bridge and auditioning for his next job at that point. I’d imagine a 1st round rookie would be starting before the season is over.

I think Bryce needs to complete 65% of his passes as the floor---have twice as many TDs as INTs, and throw for around 3400 yards (which is 200 per game on average)

I still base it on this simple indicator:  If you have the ball on your own 20 yard line with 2 timeouts and 2:00 minutes on the clock and you are down by 4, do you head for the exit ramps or do you stick around to celebrate the victory?  In other words, is the other team thinking, "We scored too soon."  If so, if being behind with 80 yards to go and all you have is 2 timeouts and you need a TD gives you swag, you have a franchise qb.

Ekwonu was before Young.

He was but if you read all the Fitterer crap, Scott loved Young the year before he was in the draft. Don’t think for a second that Iky wasn’t picked knowing we were going QB in the next draft.

Then you sit him on the bench.

You really can't though. Do you want the guy you drafted being mentored from the guy he's replacing? Also, when the rookie struggles, because he will, you can't bench him for the former number 1 guy.

The only way to do it sadly would be to cut ties completely, bring in someone who could be a bridge QB for the first 4-6 games, then take his role as in game mentor. Anything else is just too damn messy.

This could depend on who we take at QB.
I am not opposed to the guy sitting his entire rookie year.  I doubt we will be picking one or even top five.
Bryce gets his FA status after an audition year starting for us and the new guy learned the system.

All depends on where the QB is taken. Top 5 pick, even top 10, i don't think Bryce is kept. Late 1st or 2nd rounder, it's possible I guess, but I can still see it causing issues in the locker room. Rookie QBs should sit the 1st year most of the time. QBs who sit do better.

Im of the mind though that you build your offensive system and then find the guy that can be dropped into that system rather than spending 3 or 4 years trying to build around a QB while hoping he develops.

I like the reclamation project approach. Not sure the failure rate is any worse than a 1st round rookie.
Actually I like the throw the kitchen sink at it Reclamation, drafting, take every shot you have. Short of that ridiculousness of mortgaging your future for a serious long shot like Bryce.

Also, man up. Pro up. If you are a QB in that situation, a lame duck on your way out, the best thing you can do is be 100% the same as you were when things were the man. People will be watching.
