WalterFootball's latest mock has the Panthers taking Newton

It's funny, some mocks have dropped Newton down, others moved him up. I personally think that the amount of good things Rivera said about him helped him more than anything else.

The thing to note though is many of these mocks really have no idea how Newton, Gabbert, etc did in interviews with us, which is going to be the deciding factor.

At this point, the only player who has recently been pegged to us that I would not be happy with is Bowers, and that's because of his recent injury taking longer to recover from.

Surely those people are idiots, since they haven't been 100% right on every draft pick over the years.

Beat you to it, haters.

Stop calling us haters because we don't think Cam should be the #1 pick.

"Derp My Daddy says I have to finish college before I play in the NFL Derp"

Yeah, Luck shown great restraint when he was given such a choice.

or he wanted to get his degree because:

a) there will be a rookie wage scale whether he enters the draft now or after

b) he wants to finish his degree because he realizes he won't play football forever

c) college is already an awesome experience, can you imagine what it's like for a star athlete?

d) he will be drafted #1 overall next year too even if he sat out the entire season, so it's not like he's losing anything.

...I can keep naming reasons. All of you folks yelling at us Cam "HATERS" seem to hate on just about every other prospect not named Cam...

jeez, can you guys just relax and realize not everyone agrees with you? I've said many times that if the Panthers took Cam, I'd support it and wish for the best the same way for Clausen. I was mad when they drafted him but I supported it and hoped for the best.

ok so because a CB has NEVER been selected #1 means it still wont happen? I just dont want to grasp that logic. What corner has ever been this highly touted?

Not to mention, which draft has looked this bad for a #1 overall pick?

And look at last year, DTs are rarely taken top 5 but two went in the top 3. That had never happened before but it was the right move for both of the teams taking them.

Teams go after the top talents so long as it makes sense for them. Who cares what teams did in previous years with different needs and completely different players available.

Can I answer?

a) I have no idea what you're talking about

b) Whats a degree? I have a diploma, does that count?

c) eh, I went to cpcc for 3 years before I dropped out, it wasnt that great

d) I only care about now, now NOW!!!

My biggest issue with their logic not to take Peterson is the "well teams just won't throw his way"... how is that not a positive for us? I guess Revis isn't that important to the Jets defense because teams just stop throwing his way...

about the only thing people agree on is that he's going to have a learning curve...

which is why many people don't peg him at #1.

I'm just not worried about him next year. I don't care if we drafted Luck I wouldn't want him to start from day 1. i am interested in the end result and what that can mean for our franchise down the road. Luck, Gabbert, or Newton would benefit from sitting a year, or at least the majority of it. So take the upside and trust your coaches to cultivate that talent.

Just my opinion. FWIW (nothing :cornut:)

I hate to say it.... but..... going to Stanford or any other big time school is nothing compared to a local community college.

That is why I think Luck stayed in school and for mainly that reason only. College life is great, alot of fun for many reasons and once you leave that is over. His family had money to insure him (while of course that wont guarantee the same kind of $ he would have gotten if he did come out) but so what, and its probably enough for him to be able to enjoy College for one more year before he left that life behind. Being in the same situation I might have very easily made the same decision.

he sure did. took his talents back to santa clara. andrew luck will never play for the carolina panthers and richardson.

There's no way anyone can prove whether Luck didn't come out simply b/c he didn't want to come to CAR or b/c he wanted to stay in school.

I find the argument that he stayed b/c he didn't want to come to CAR weak b/c right now the odds of who has #1 next year will most likely be a small market team anyway - ala BUF/CIN etc IMO. In other words he could go to an even worse team like BUF that has really bad climate or JAX where no one shows up or a chronically bad team and QB killer like the Raiders...

    • overall agree on the draft grade as a whole on on each pick, but every time I read (and I have read it more than once) that we "gave up two firsts" for Bryce, I am confused. We gave up the 2024 first, but we swapped 2023 firsts, so we didn't give up anything there. We did give up our former first rounder in DJ, but I don't think thats what you mean as one of the "firsts" we gave up.
    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
