between the lines of the shockey signing?

one thing i have been thihnking about is the timing of the shockey signing.

here richardson and hurney were saying that we wouldn't/couldn't sign anyone until the CBA was done, but here we are adding shockey to the team.

2 possiblilities here...

1) richardson and hurney weren't serious about no signings till the CBA and were blowing smoke or

2) CBA is all but a done deal, or at least richardson thinks so (in which case it probably is)

is there something more to it than that?

thinking about how rigid richardson has been since heading into last season about this whole CBA situation. it just doesn't appear to me that he's a guy that would back down from his stances unless he knew the end of the fight was around the corner.

i thought the same thing yesterday that if JR is opening the purse string than he must believe a CBA will get done

not sure what the point of signing someone to a 1 year deal would be if they thought they weren't going to play football this year.
interesting point.

wouldn't an extension suggest they will get it done? I bet it will get done, we are talking money. Just need to get closer to the season so someone breaks. Won't be a fair deal with this method but its money, money is god here in america.

"Unrestricted free agents" vs "street free agents" or players who have been cut.

Any normal year, it would have been the same deal because until the league year is over, everyone is still under contract. But a guy who gets cut can sign immediately.

The difference is that in a normal year, we would have been able to extend our own players prior to deadline. The 30 percent rule (salary can't increase by more than thirty percent from one year to the next) plus the labor uncertainty has taken that out of the equation.

Since JR just recently figured out email...maybe he's just now learned about blogs/forums and felt he needed to buck the "I'm cheap" tag he's earned. If there's not to be a season...he's willing to sign a 30yr old TE to a 1 year deal? But not willing to pay two coaching staffs?

LOL

I agree with you btw...and think that he feels the deal is pretty much done. I think JR and the owners have been humbled a bit since the Doty decision and the eventual threat of bringing all the books out.

If I were D. Smith...I'd still have the decertifying of the union ready because the owners are playing their last game with delay tactics. The NFLPA know their members can't really afford to be locked out.

To me the Shockey signing says a lot more about who the QB is going to be on opening day. I don't think they would go out and get a guy like Shockey (who's been known to bitch if he's not getting enough throws his way) unless they believed there was a proven QB they could acquire. I think this signing makes the chances of us trading for a Carson Palmer type guy much higher....

    • I was thinking about what you said in your post and my whole draft philosophy is kind of the opposite. I believe that every prospect is a gamble and a risk so if you're going to gamble then you gamble on upside and potential. If Bryce Young fails it won't be because he wasn't pro-ready or he isn't accurate or any of those things that you will worry about with Willis. It will be because he lacks the parameters and traits that are needed to do the job what good is it to know what to do if you don't have the arm strength to get it there the speed to capitalize on what you see I'd rather gamble on the guy that already has those assets at the ready available to him then a guy who looks the part but you're not sure he can get it done with the ability that he has. I think you're doing yourself a disservice if you're only looking at wins losses or production and saying hey he won or through 50 touchdowns you can't factor in like some of that production might have come from his teammates or weapons around them you got to look at the whole big picture and in calculating all of that I put a higher value on athletic traits and do you have the things I need you to do to be able to do the job and the rest of it I think is coaching out gamble on the long-term upside versus who I think is pro-ready right now
    • For what it’s worth there’s rumors Pete carrol is going to be fired. Wonder if he retires or if canales can get him on the staff somehow.
    • to all the Low-T Betas crying about "pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza" / "we’ll get embarrassed if we admit we like it" stop the nonsense stop the embarrassment go back to watching The View with your girlfriend’s other boyfriend while eating your dry cheese-only slice like a toddler Pizza culture has not sniffed innovation in nearly a decade, a total abyss of pathetic, boring, flavorless display of culinary cowardice Do I think pineapple pizza is going to replace pepperoni and conquer the world, absolutely not Would I be excited to proudly order it anyway? hell yea and deep down you’d give up making out with your first cousin on the weekend to take a bite of a hot, fresh, pineapple slice We need to normalize pineapple on pizza to set the blocks for the future of flavor We have an up-and-coming generation of taste buds who need guidance a STUD of a topping that is COOKING a wrecking ball of sweetness that hits like a freight train a stud salty counterpart like ham or bacon to balance it a young buck of creativity for toppings that is just getting started a true #1 cheese holding it all together a solid crust foundation a sauce that is progressing It’s not perfect, it’s not traditional, but I am beyond elated with the direction pizza is going I will be in the pizzeria cheering on the boys stacking pineapple on that dough and so should you And for the national mouth breather association who will undoubtedly poo and flame everything I post… have a blessed day
