Rivera: No promises for Jimmy Clausen

saying Clausen didn't have a fair opportunity last season =/= saying Clausen should start next season

there are more options than Clausen or Newton just so you know.

He will never understand this. To him anyone who doesn't want Cam is racist and is fine with losing.

Nah we just need a vet for 3 years while we groom a rookie qb. Could be from last years draft this years or next but none of them will be good for awhile.

If there is football this year, we don't have the opportunity to grab a top QB prospect in next years draft. And Clausen showed no signs at all that he can be a NFL QB. My dream scenario would be signing Asomugha, drafting Newton and signing McNabb/Palmer. But everything would have to work perfect for that to happen. That's why I think the most realistic scenario is drafting Peterson (since the FA class for CB has even less options than QB), signing Palmer, and drafting a QB this year not named Newton or Gabbert.

i still want to see what Pike can do. Clausen had a rough year but still could turn it around. Honestly I dont see a great QB in this years draft. Take a QB next year when there are better choices.

Anti-Clausen does not mean Pro-Cam. By stating that Clausen is not the starter, then teams will not assume we are happy with him. Teams that pick below Buffalo who have their eye on Gabbert or Newton dropping to them may reconsider. To assure that they get the QB they want, the have to offer us something that might make us trade out of #1. That is what is going on here. Do you really think the coach is going to evaluate personnel in the media before the first OTA?

there have.been numerous posts on this board suggesting Clausen didnt get a fair shake and is entitled to another year "to see him with a different staff". More times than not, those folks want qb adressed next season. Meanwhile us paying fans and psl holders foot the bill of another losing year just so those fans can get their dream qb who may or may not come out. worst business plan ever. so its not shocking the Panthers are looking to do the opposite. The days of "entitled" lackluster qbing in Carolina are over.
I think Clausen didn't get a fair shake last year. He was in a lousy situation on so many levels, it isn't funny. I don't even think Cam Newton would have been able to succeed in that environment. So yeah, I look forward to seeing what Jimmy can do for an interested and competent offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach combination.

And I know this may confuse you, but I think Newton is a gamble that you have to take. The guy drips with potential, he can potentially re-define the QB position. If we take him and he busts, we'll regret it for a few years tops. If we pass on him and he reaches that potential, we'll regret it for decades.

To me, the ideal scenario is to take Newton, and have Clausen look like a real NFL QB out there. Let Newton sit the first year, learn the offense, get used to the speed, and figure out the footwork. Then see what you can get for Jimmy after he's shown the ability to lead a team. Everyone wins--especially the fans.

And BTW, that whole "entitled" thing you believe in, well I think it's full of hooey. But you see whatever you want to. :)

Yes. With Scherer out of the picture, I expect progress in the QB dept.

Thought next year's draft class for QB would be weaker? If not then Drafting Peterson, signing Palmer, and drafting a QB next year could be the most realistic. However, thats still leaving things to chance to pick one of those QBs next year. Also they got to think if drafting a QB next year in rounds 2 or 3 (Or later 1st) would be better than drafting a QB this year in rounds 2 (if we trade up) or 3.

Next year's draft class can not possibly be weaker than this years just because it will have a couple great prospects, but how much stronger it will be is up in the air... Either way, you can't plan around drafting a QB next year as your solution to the QB position this year.

Still don't want Cam Newton, though. Too many question marks.

You and I are in complete agreement.

Except the last sentence :p

Good, he shouldnt be promised anything. If he's going to start next year, he has to earn it. Bring in Cameron Jerrell or Gabbert, a vet QB, and let them battle it out for the starting spot. No need to chance it and wait until next year for a QB. Aint no telling where we'll pick in the draft next year.

This only works if

1. Teams actually want Jimmy after he had one good year

2. Newton actually works out

But if those things happen then that would be a great situation
