The Cam Newton and Race Thread!

well here is some gas on the fire:

I want success - not showboating.

One could argue that Newton has been quite successful.

More successful in junior college and college than any of the Panthers quarterbacks, Collins through Clausen.

Was Joe Namath a showboat? Would you have called him cocky? He won a superbowl and made the Jets, significant.

Newton could be interesting and good for the Panthers. He could also fail. That is true of any draft prospect; but, what I've noticed is a lot of people talk about his 'football intelligence' or 'what is between his ears'.

I wonder, if those same people feel the same way about Ryan Mallet. If ever there is someone who smacks of stupidity when speaking, it's that kid.

As someone said earlier, I have never seen one prospect generate so much split discussion.

Mallett is a lot better than Barkley. I am sorry TRD. I like everything you say. Even if I don't admit it and give you a hard time. Barkley does not compare against Mallett.

Again too long to quote the whole thing.

One thing to consider is that Mallet's question marks are not his physical talents but his mental capacity. If he was even average mentally, he'd be the #1 QB this year no doubt and probably #2 next year but it doens't work that way.

He's only 2 inches taller, maybe 1, and played in a friendly offense so comparing stats isn't exactly accurate. USC is a run first, true pro style offense with Barkley under center a lot and handing the ball off. They listed 4 starting RBs, 4. USC was 25 in rushing while Arkansas was 59th.

So while Mallet put up the big numbers, Barkley played in a traditional pro offense and deferred to his teammates. He was under center for most of his throws and Mallet was in the shotgun.

Barkley was also the first true freshman to start the season under center at USC, a big time QB school. He also started all 4 years at his HS, a big QB high school in SoCal.

He has a great arm and great size for a QB but what will set him apart from Mallet is what is between his ears, how he has been prepared for the NFL and the intangibles he brings.

Barkley doesn't have any huge holes in his game and Mallet has at least one, maybe the biggest tool a QB needs to bring with him into the NFL.

I'd cheer for Newton as I would any other qb on the roster, if we were to select him. Could care less about color.

I'm more concerned with all the hype Gabbert has been receiving. What is up with the some of the sports media? Before January, Gabbert was a nobody, none of us were really talking about him. Then all of a sudden a few draft gurus put him on their big boards and now, he's considered by a lot to be the #1 qb of this draft?

I don't want either of them, or any of the others.

But if that's who the Panthers take, then I'll hope that they're right and I'm wrong.

(and I have plenty of practice for that; I was doing it this time last year too)

No you are racist! Point is college means crap when evaluating for the NFL.

But no one could possibly object to bringing White in for any practical football reasons. That's just unthinkable :nonod:

So it must mean if people don't want Pat White, they're either secret racists or have some personal vendetta against him.

After all, that's the only reason people are against Newton, right? Nobody could possibly disagree that he's the greatest prospect ever. It just has to be for personal reasons.

(the sad part is I wish I were making this stuff up, but that seems to be how people on here actually think) :frown2:

I will put it this way if we do draft Newton I dont want him starting this year or next. Not that I dont like him but that I like rookie QB's to sit for 3 years til they grasp the knowledge and speed of the NFL. Unfortunately in todays NFL that hardly happens.

    • AT got what he deserved. Be gone and enjoy those 4 catches and the bench and your pay cut
    • we have been bad offensively basically every game Rico Dowdle hasn't gone full Tecmo Bowl Bo Jackson on folks.
    • Strongly disagree with the premise here. Without getting too into it, the biggest gripe for many has always been his footwork and pocket presence.  Shallow drops, happy feet, bad awareness - his overall technique is highly unconventional and not beneficial to his size/frame.  His upper body gets mad out of sync with his lower, drops back parallel to the LOS, erratic behavior. When you take that to the NFL level, you get swallowed up. And he got shellshocked and started bailing way too soon on plays. Unnecessary throwaways when he should step UP into the pocket and hit.   He got away with it in school because sooo much of his work was out of structure or quick hits to Jamo.  He was able to not bail early and stick in the pocket this last game. He also was dropping deeper than he usually does to create sight lanes. He can’t really outrun DLs so he needs to create that space via drop to survey properly. When he does these bs skip hops in the gun, he barely drops and is flooded. He needs to stay active with his feet but learn to step into the pocket more.  His average arm when he’s not doing this right turns Pennington esque.
