YAS: Panthers need to take Cam Newton

The old Panthers automatically would have gone with a defensive lineman because the general rule of thumb is you don’t take a cornerback or receiver at No. 1 and the quarterbacks would not even have been a consideration.

But Newton and Gabbert are still very much in consideration and that says a lot. Even if you take the next step and narrow it down to the two quarterbacks, the old Carolina rule of thumb would have dictated that the Panthers go with Gabbert. He doesn’t have the background questions.

He also doesn’t have the upside Newton does. At best, Gabbert’s going to turn out to be something like Mark Sanchez, a solid quarterback, but not a guy who is going to carry you to the Super Bowl on his own. Believe it or not, the powers that are still with the Panthers think Jimmy Clausen, a second-round pick last year, could turn out to be something comparable to Sanchez.

Newton can be more than that. At best, Newton’s going to be Freeman or Ben Roethlisberger or maybe even something better than we’ve ever seen.

And don’t give me that old line about how missing on a quarterback will set back your franchise for five years. And I sure don’t want to hear that you’re three years away from winning when you draft a quarterback at the top of the draft.

The Bucs started winning in Freeman’s first full season as a starter and the rest of the roster wasn’t all that talented. The Falcons, who were about as low as a team can be in 2007, drafted Ryan, played him right away and immediately started winning in 2008.

No.

Sanchez type with a strong run game and a nasty D would be fine by me. It's not like Big Ben would have sniffed the playoffs without LeBeau and several HoF'ers on the Steeler's roster.

when the game is on the line i want a diffrence maker at the QB position not another game manager.

Sanchez is like a slightly more mobile Delhomme (the early years) or a Chicago Grossman. Don't want that.

I just do not see Cam Newton as having that much more upside that one would say that Gabbert is Sanchez (who... really isn't a similar player) and Newton is Freeman/Big Ben. Gabbert has all the tools to not just be a good quarterback but be a great one. Not saying the same isn't true of Cam, but I think he's bit more than a little hard on Gabbert. Just my own (bias) opinion, though.

there's a topic that has this already at http://www.carolinahuddle.com/forum/58773-yas-kicking-the-tires-on-cam-newton-3.html on the front page, but I suppose they are two different articles, so!

I'll say what I said there: I find it very amusing that in the same week that Yas and Schefter switch to Cam Newton as our pick, Gantt switches away from him.

Ganntt = Charlotte Observer/ The Herald ( CO Sucks)

Yas and Schefter = ESPN ( ESPN SUCKS too but not as bad as the CO)

Sanchez is actually going to be more than a game manager

I've seen a few of your post and you repeat this. You can't see the upside of newton and think gabbert has more. While i'd rather have cam just for the upside reason, i wouldn't be upset with gabbert. I think pat is right, when i think of his style it is alot like sanchez. Looking at his play last season reflects that.

His supbar stats show minus Alexander, he makes decent choices with the ball but won't blow you away and win with his own ability. He does not have the potential to lift a team on his own. While insert cam and auburn is a national champion. Gabbert is the more pro ready and safer pick but, this is chess not checkers when drafting at 1 your in it for the long term.

how do Gabbert and Sanchez have similar styles?

How you feel about Cams upside is probably linked to how much damage you believe he can do outside the pocket. If you think he is just going to get killed and won't run you are probably right. If you think he is uniquely qualified bc of his size to make big plays with his legs than you really love his upside.

To me his upside is a big ben mike vick hybrid. Gabbert at best IMO is a matt ryan.

    • Didn't  see this posted (since 2023) but since folks have been posting that you can't judge a draft class for three years (a ridiculous take), I thought I'd post this to see what people thought about the 2023 draft. Unfortunately this may not be the most interesting class to do this with but I do quite like retrospective draft grades. Would appreciate other's takes on this (and other recent) draft classes.   1(1) - Bryce Young QB: I am a bigger Bryce Young apologist than most (maybe all). I like the kid. But there is no way around it: This was a terrible pick. If he had been picked in the 4th or even the 3rd round I would feel pretty good about it. But this was the first overall pick that we gave up two firsts, our best offensive player to get.  GRADE: C -    2(39) - Jonathan Mingo WR: not much to say here here. He was here for two years. His yards per catch are on par with Bryce's yards per pass. Rough stuff. To date he has still never scored a touchdown in the NFL GRADE: F   3(80) - DJ Johnson OLB: a pick I hated as soon as it happened and an example of why the premise of this thread is honestly dumb. This was a bad pick when it happened. Most people knew it.  Then came training camp and he did not look good. Then came the preseason which confirmed what we saw in TC. Then came the season which confirmed what we saw in preseason. To date, he has half a sack in his career. GRADE: F 4 (114) Chandlers Zavala G: Honestly the best pick of this draft which really speaks to how awful this draft is. Other than Bryce, the only pick still on the team. He is mostly average or below average depth which in round 4 is not terrible. But he had a pff score of 43.5 and though I think people have unrealistic expectations for draft picks, I still would want a little more from a fourth round pick GRADE: C+   5 (145) - Jammie Robinson S: I liked the pick when it happened but ended up being a disappointment. He logged 1 tackle with the falcons last year and not enough snaps to get a grade on PFF.  GRADE: F OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: F
