Clayton Mailbag - we're getting Newton

Yet another Cam thread but it's getting more and more concrete it seems.

Good bathroom/coffee read:

Q: Panther fan here. Am I missing something with Blaine Gabbert? We didn't know anything about him before Andrew Luck decided to forego the draft. In a defensively weak conference with perennial contenders (Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma), he never grabbed any national attention with his play. Why is he suddenly rated above Cam Newton by so many observers? Isn't he more comparable to JaMarcus Russell on the field than Newton? At least Newton has shown the will to win.

Adam in New York

A: Adam, I think the Panthers won't put the Russell label on Gabbert because they believe he will be a good quarterback. I don't get the idea they think he will be great. That's why I see them taking Cam Newton and passing on Gabbert. Don't forget the Panthers still like Jimmy Clausen, but they also can't pass on a quarterback who can get great. I think the Panthers believe Newton can be great and Gabbert can be just good. I would bet their rating on Clausen would be pretty close to Gabbert. Newton's rating would be significantly better. Relax, Adam. You're getting Newton.

Plus McShay said he is hearing a lot of rumors about Carolina and Cam Newton and is now mocking him here.

You have to wonder though if these aren't just media people talking in circles to each other. Where are these rumors coming from? Are they coming from just the media circle or actual scouts and GMs??

Yea, it's becoming pretty clear even to me. Sorry anti-Camer's but I don't see us passing on him unless we trade and at this point if a decent trade isn't possible I really don't care which one of the top 5 guys it is...just a different direction/approach,whatever. Hopefully we won't fug up our fist round pick like we did with our second last year, I would hate for another decent QB prospect to be started early.

    • So answer the question. Why did Chark and Hurst have the same metrics (go look them up, I did... and one was actually worse in LA) with Justin Herbert? Why did Mingo have the same metrics with Dak? You're right, there is a common denominator, just not the one you're trying to make.  Why could DJ Moore get open with Bridgewater, Allen, Cam 2.0, Darnold, Baker, Williams, Bagent? I'll answer the question for you - because he is a good WR unlike Chark/Hurst/Mingo.
    • I mean I just don't understand the argument. Baker and Sam both have been pro bowl QBs post their time here. And you just said yourself that is due to him having a damn good roster around him and they are well coached. You're even saying the bad baker is still there somewhere, but he is in a good organization with good roster and coaching that they are getting the best out of him. Why does Baker and Sam get all that benefit of the doubt but when it comes to Bryce it must be a BY9 problem, not an org or team problem?  Hell I got a guy below you arguing with me that Chark/Hurst/Mingo sucked because Bryce wouldn't throw them open. It's ridiculous how far the stretch goes.
    • Correct.  It’s really hard to get open in the NFL when opposing defenses gameplan and cheat coverage/routes on all your players because they know your QB can’t make certain throws/plays.   magically no one that comes to Carolina can get open or make plays with the ball in their hands…..it’s like there is one singular common dominator to it all.  BY makes playing defense way too easy.   NFL players are too good to allow one side to cheat coverage and not respect all the potential threats of a route  so you can dial up a great play.  But if corners and safeties just cheat coverage and know X and Y happening on route/threats….getting open gets hard when they just play it one way.  Getting open has a lot to do with the different threats a WR can pose on a given play.
