CBS Sports: Panthers continue march towards Newton

The draft is just over three weeks away. Try and hold fast through all of these rampant speculations.

Let's be reasonable here for a brief moment, and think things through on each of the different candidates:

Cam Newton - QB is a position of need on this team, and last year made it quite clear how much a one-dimensional offense gets exposed in this league. Cam has the potential to be a franchise QB in the NFL. He's got tremendous arm strength and can stand tall in the pocket and allow his receivers to get open down field or move the chains with his feet. Rivera and Hurney have both stated that this is a position of concern. Since he's also the belle of the ball, showing obvious interest will assist in possibly trading down.

Marcell Dareus - DT is an abyss on this team. Moore, Clausen, Pike sadly is better depth than Landri, Neblett, and Irvin. Cam Newton more than likely might be better served by riding pine for a season or three, Dareus would be an instant starter. Having a big body to collapse the pocket and stifle runners will help with getting the defense off of the field sooner. At the same time, DT has a lot of depth this year.

AJ Green - Top 10 pick from Summerville, SC. The Panthers love the idea of drafting "homegrown" players. WR was a position of need last year and while LaFell and Gettis showed promise, Armanti is not exactly a guarantee. There's also the question mark whether or not Gettis will be able to perform consistently, or if he's a one-game wonder. If Smitty is traded, AJ would be a great replacement. It'd definitely appeal to the Charleston market (which is chockful of everything but Panthers fans). However, this is a position with a logjam of youth already, just like the QB position. Is the solution to get younger?

Patrick Peterson - In the same line as Cam Newton, a physical stud. Many regard him as the best player available with Pro Bowler potential. Richard Marshall is more than likely out of here, leaving the CB rotation with Gamble, Captain, McClain, and Stanford. McClain and Stanford looked just as unimpressive as the QBs & DTs did this season. Captain is a great nickel, but will he end up like Marshall and end up having to mug bigger WRs until PI's finally start getting called? Peterson is a potential day 1 starter. Question marks about his Wonderlic as well as whether or not he might be better suited to play Safety, plus the half-full/half-empty perspective on being taken out of a game by being thrown away from.

Blaine Gabbert - lolololol

PANTHERS LOVE HOMEGROWN TALENT!!1!1. Cam Newton is from Atlanta, Ga which is 3 hours from Charlotte and Summerville, SC is 5 hours. Ca, Newton is more home growned than Green.

Just anutter sign!!1!11!

Cam Newton meets with Panthers right before the court hearing that could lift the lockout....another sign?

We're still 3 weeks away from the draft. We will bring Gabbert back in again too. Then all of the media will be on the Gabbert #1 bandwagon. Then, I suspect, we'll bring in Dareus as well and he'll end up being our #1 pick when it's all said and done.

Summerville is 3 hours away unless you drive like an old lady.

again, how would anyone know how JR feels? he's not talking to anyone other than hurney and rivera and not a single one of them would be talking to alleged sources about this stuff

Thats not exactly true. There are some other stakeholders in the team that have from time to time discussed personal decisions outside the staff.I am not implying that this is the case.

Just what we needed....another fuging Cam Newton thread.

Please stop creating threads everytime some talking head predicts that we will take Cam. Just add it to an existing thread.

How about you kiss my ass? Every time I see a new reporter with sources reporting new information, I'm posting a new thread. Boo hoo, lots of draft talk in the final weeks before we pick #1, whatever shall we do.

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
