Gruden's QB Camp: Cam Newton

Same here. Seems like everytime someone makes a point that I agree with to take someone different. Newton impresses me again.

There is only one thing we should do. Do not force him in too soon. Let him learn about being an NFL QB. Defenses are complex and will confuse him early. Not that he won't learn them but would confuse any rookie.

The concerns about coming from a Spread offense to a Pro-Style offense doesn't concern me. Our coaches get big money to coach. He can be coached.

The Russell - Newton comparison doesn't hold water. Russell never protraited himself as a student of the game like Newton does.

He might be from a Different System but He will cause alot of trouble for NFL teams the way Vick did to us for many years.

DRAFT NEWTON.... YES MY FINAL ANSWER

I agree that defenses can confuse a rookie but at the same time we have a head coach who was the coordinator of the #1 defense in the league. So Im sure if Rivera notices certain things from the opponent he will help him adjust

My point exactly. We have coaches that are supposed to COACH. It isn't as if he is going to be left out in the cold.

I will say this for the 1000th time. (Not drected at you) Aside the talent and the good and bad part of his image. His desire to be the best is the grain of sand that tips the scales in favor if Newton. You have a young man with the desire to be good chances are he is going to be good no matter how talented he is. Add his talent to the equation and this is a NO BRAINER on the pick.

Go Panthers

...and btw, do you see the throw he makes from the pocket in this clip during the national championship game?

Someone tell me again about how he can't make throws from the pocket?

it's more about consistently making plays with his arm in the pocket - not just hitting wide open guys, but fitting balls into tight spaces. hell even TRD gave him props for that throw if I recall, because he did avoid a defender and deliver a nice pass.

I really hope he'll be as good as people around here seem sure of, because he'll be extremely fun to watch if so :)

No more ludicrous than to think that a QB with a rating in the 20s and 50s in his Super Bowls is the reason they won them. Because that's really the only "proof" (as if such a thing were possible...this isn't a mathematical equation, it's all opinion) anyone has for Big Ben's supposed elite status, his rings. How hard does a QB have to try to not be the Super Bowl MVP if his team wins?

man i thought u were joking at first, now i cant take anything you say seriously

obviously, i haven't been on the huddle long but has there ever been a player the huddle was as split on about taking in the 1st rd as cam has been?

split? like 90/10? i guess u can call that split, just not down the middle. i have totally warmed up to the idea of drafting him as well. maybe b/c i think it's going to happen and i have no other choice? exciting, no doubt.

yes he will...he's one of those players that if he can get it together fans of other teams will want to watch us play more just to see him

I only heard five QBs mentioned by newton. 3 of them from our division, then Peyton and Rodgers. just saying.

it's not like he rambled off a real lengthy list. it was just a handful, and he failed to include the likes of Brady, Rivers and Big Ben.

It's not a unique opinion. I'm not the only person that sees Big Ben for the just-above-average-at-best QB that he is. Jake Delhomme could have won multiple Super Bowls with those Steeler defenses. That's all Ben really is, a harder to tackle Jake Delhomme.

    • It appears that he sees things differently than the QB and OC, so Cam's advice is spot on. It isn't about number of targets, it's about quality of targets. Trust and being on the same page. BY doesn't know how to anticipate what XL is doing. And XL doesn't like where BY is placing passes. One on one film study would go a long way. More for BY than XL though. He has to adjust to XL. I really don't think XL can adjust on the fly.
    • If the team shows improvement, then he shouldn't be in danger of losing his job - even if the record doesn't reflect. This was a very young team (with a lot of new vet starters) that overperformed last season. Somebody's doing something right. Consistency is key with so much youth. And we're potentially looking at new starters at ILB and FS. Those are positions that take time to fully understand the defense. ILB calls the front 7. Safety calls the back 4. Injuries at WR and IOL killed the offense last season. Depth needs to be upgraded. Same with Edge. I think they would have won more games if Pat Jones doesn't go down early. Be smart with the roster and draft. Trade players for assets when it's time to pay them more than they're worth - yes, that includes BY if he doesn't make a pretty big jump. That's one of the many reasons Tillis is as important as anyone to the future of this team.
    • He had heart surgery a while back he looks Fraile I hope he is okay
