NFL Players already taking out high risk loans to survive lockout

I know Mario Williams (go to school together) and if all of these player spend money like he does, then there's only going to be a handful of players NOT living on the streets by December if there is no season.

Why is Mario in school?

He also has one of the highest contracts in the NFL with a poo ton already in his pocket.

He didn't graduate before he went pro, and now that he has a ton of free time on his hands he is back in school finishing up his degree.

And I know he has a really big contract, was just saying that if every player tried to spend like him then I can see how these guys are already in trouble.

More money = more debt to most of these guys. Hell, give me that much cash when I was in my early 20s and I would be in the same boat.

I don't know about that. Considering I entered my 20's a year ago, in the midst of the economic crisis, I'm much more aware of how important saving money is. Plus, I've seen my family struggle financially, so I've learned from their mistakes.

I agree that most people would be in the same boat, but there are exceptions.

It's a shame people that make that kind of money tend to manage it so poorly. Even the practice squad guys should be making plenty to set some aside, especially since they've known for 2+ years that this lockout was coming.

I remember reading somewhere that the bankruptcy rate for ex NFL players is somewhere around 78%, and for NBA it's even higher.

I don't mean to be racist, but...

Hopefully, this lockout situation gets settled soon. It's sad to hear about any of these guys struggling.

Are you serious? I feel bad for the fans not the players, if these players learned how to manage their money right they wouldn't be in this predicament.

No it's not. All of these guys had a minimum of 3 free years of college at major universities. It's their own dumbass fault if they couldn't find some time to work in a personal finance class somewhere along the way.

Yes, I'm serious. Why wouldn't I be?

Not all of them, but a good portion of these players come from poverty/low income households, so when they get their hands on some big money, they dont know how to manage that.

As a fan, I'd be upset if this lockout causes me to miss out on some football, but I'll still feel sorry for the players who will struggle. I dont like to see anybody struggle, I dont care who they are.

    • Basically agree.  He is the one of that bunch that offers upgraded pass catching along with he is supposed to be kind of special.   Then you have the OL and the ideas that if they perform you can have JAG backs and still do well. So okay we could be fine.  But Brooks is important and to me that receiving element sets him apart.  So there sure is something riding on him.     What strikes me as incongruent is people over in Atlanta or those that follow them look at Penix with a third surgery and act like it is no big deal.      And we are on pins and needles over Brooks.  Either they should worry a lot more or we should worry a lot less.
    • I usually go a game or two optimist over the consensus here but this is too early for me to say. I need to see some players on the field.  I am not feeling real optimistic though.
    • Okay as a ‘take CJ’ fan I actually don’t obsess over CJ and Houston, contrary to the narrative.  But I thought I picked up some noise that his OL left a lot to be desired.    Not a single Beyce supporter would judge him harshly if he had a crappy OL. We all know that.    So be fair about it.  A QB needs to be protected.  Especially a guy that gets to his spot and wants to finish the play from there. Which CJ is.
