Draft Nervousness

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

I say, just enjoy the moment.

The Panthers are relevant again and the team's name is actually mentioned on National TV.

Unless they win a few playoff games, they won't be relevant again.

My beef with Hurney is always three fold:

a) the often said never addressing the most important position in football even when he knew Delhomme's arm was shot...and let's face it, they had to know.

b) taking players at one position and trying to make them something else. If the team want's a LB, take a LB. Don't waste 3-4 years for a safety in college to become good at another position (Thomas Davis).

c) stop trading away future draft picks. Just stop it. Stop it now. It has not one time paid dividends for them...and it's too soon to talk about Otah being a success. A player is only a success when they are on the field and he had injury concerns in college and they STILL drafted him.

I can agree to a point, and I looked at that. But on the flipside, can you honestly say that taking a guy like Trevor Pryce, Tiki Barber or - more recently - Mohamed Massaquoi or Andy Levitre wouldn't have made the team better?

There were guys available who would be better than Brown and would have filled needs. It would have just meant filling the other needs via different means.

Sure there were guys who would have filled a need at other positions but we had other guys at those positions who we felt would fill the need. THe whole idea of drafting BPA irregardless of need is fine as long as there are no glaring holes and you are looking for the best guy you can. But like this year, there are glaring holes particularly at QB and DT. It is hard to pick up a LB like Miller even if he might be the BPA while ignoring more obvious needs.

You can fill positions a number of ways and if we had free agency before the draft, we might make different choices than we are likely to make. But given the way things are shaking out, it is hard to not find whoever you can in the draft to at least try and shore the positions you may struggle to find elsewhere.

The Panthers under Hurney have never drafted pure BPA.

They factor need in, though they attempt to do what the Steelers do and backfill preemptively.

Many folks wondered why we drafted Connor in the third when we really had a good core of LBs at the time. We had other bigger needs but he was considered a steal at the time. I think he was considered a BPA pick almost exclusively. Interestingly we ended up needing him sooner than some folks thought.

I think that most GMs say they are picking BPA but it usually the BPA at a position of current need or one anticipated in the near future.

I am nervous about this draft as well.At the number one pick the math coupled with the postonal need says you should pick a qb or an elite DE. Not to say that Newton and Gabbert want succeed ,both have the physcial attributes but that alone does not = success in the NFL.At the other positions I think at the DT,CB,and WR are much easier to address in FA .Bowers dropping due to injuries is not helping as well.

I could not agree more.

THe nervousness for me is not about who we draft but how we develop them. Given that Rivera hired a bunch of former players who are all known to be good teachers I am optimistic. Still they are largely unknown to us. I don't worry about Newton if we draft him. He has proven in 2 systems back to back that he picks things very quickly and can perform at a high level. The question is how good is Chud and Shula in teaching him what he needs to know and briniging him along at a good pace. And of course nervous that this lockout will drag on which gives the coaches less time to work with him in general.

As for the original post, and me trusting Hurney in the draft:

Personally, I wouldn't trust Hurney to pick our laundry detergent and get it right, certainly don't trust him in an NFL draft, and haven't for about 5 years.

I would like to see him try to pick out the right sanitary napkin. Its been 25 years and I cant do it.

Like others have already stated, every team hits and misses. It's more difficult to notice the busts on a good team, as it doesn't affect theom as much as other teams trying to bbuild their talent.

Once again, the picks are not just hurney's decisions. It is a group decision. Can't give all the blame/credit just to hurney.

    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
    • My top-5 JAGS: 1. Tommy Tremble: May not ever be top-tier, but has been solid and you never doubt the effort. 2. Cade Mays: Not bad for a 6th rounder. Hated to see him go. 3. Brady Christensen: One of the most versatile backup OLs in the NFL. Hopefully we re-sign him. 4. Trevis Gipson: Quietly was really solid depth last season. Glad we brought him back. 5. Brycen Tremayne: Has been solid depth at WR, flashing at times last year.
