Final Prediction for the number #1 overall pick

If we don't trade back Gabbert or Dareus.

I really don't think we will take Newton, way too many question marks. Remember a few years ago when most people thought we would take RaShard Mendenhall if we went RB then we took Stewart? I think we're creating a smokescreen around Newton but I think Gabbert is a target no matter where we are picking.

Didn't Hurney say that the plan was to narrow down the pick between three prospects by Good Friday? If thats the case, and I didn't feel like starting a new thread for this, who do you think the top three are right now?

I'm going with Dereus, Peterson and Miller. I think the QB may have talked their way out of the discussion and while Green is really good there are already two up and coming WR on the team.

With no FA period before the draft, its really hard to predict this pick.

1) Dareus would fill a need at DT, but Carolina has also been working out DTs that would likely be available at the start of the 3rd round though that could be a possible smokescreen.

2) Newton would fill a need at QB, but he has questions about him (on and off field) and would likely not produce much the first year or two. This was by far the worse position for Carolina last year and I do feel that Cam has the biggest upside of any player in the draft. All the Newton talk could also be a smokescreen.

3) Patrick Peterson wouldn't be filling a need, but IMO is the best player in the draft. Very rare size and speed for a corner coupled with leadership ability. He reminds me of a young Ronnie Lott (the greatest safety ever IMO). This would be my pick if I had the chance to hit FA first for DT and/or QB. But I don't so oh well.

4) Blaine Gabbert is also possible at QB, but he has questions about his game as well. He's not the athlete Cam Newton is and also came from a spread offense that generally doesn't translate well to the NFL.

5) AJ Green is a very rare talent at WR, but I feel that he is the least likely player to be drafted 1st in this draft. We don't know what Steve Smith wants to do at this point. Also, Gettis and Lafel showed alot of promise at WR with terrible QB play.

For some reason I like Mallett the best of the QB's, I just think he has some growing up to do. He will be great if he takes some advice from John Daly.

Its a shame his hangover caused him to miss his interview with the Panthers.

PP7, Dareus, Miller, & Cam are pretty much what I think it boils down to.

Even though Green is my favorite player in the draft, he doesn't make sense for us at number one...maybe if we were at 4 or 5. I also think Hurney learned his lesson about taking a project prospect too high in the draft through Armanti Edwards. This makes me think: Why would Marty be willing to risk his career on Cam literally one season after basically getting a free pass when Fox & Co. left town? Also, if Clausen or Moore end up turning around and doing well, we look like geniuses and Fox looks like the incompetent one with whatever in the hell happened last season. From Hurney's perspective, I just don't see why he'd risk his career right after Richardson saved his as$ on Cam.

So, its Miller v. Dareus v. PP7 from my view and really I'd be fine with any of them.

Miller, dareus and PP are not worth 50 million guaranteed, plain and simple. If we don't draft Newton then I hopw we trade down. We could get a great player at number 5 and save a bunch of money in the process and pick up a few other picks. The only guy out there worth that kind of money is a quarterback, either Newton or Gabbert. People aways felt that Peppers never was worth what we paid for him and these guys aren't clsoe to being in Pepper's class. Why would we give then more money than we would give Peppers and they haven't even taken a snap in the NFL. The only guys out there worth that kind of money are quarterbacks, plain and simple.
