Marty Hurney strongly suggested that Carolina will take a quarterback

Just finished it and I know what you guys mean regarding Clausen. At one point, he almost said more than he should have and had to rearrange his thoughts mid-sentence. It sounded to me like he was about to throw JC under the proverbial bus.

Although Gantt led the conversation, Hurney did not try to redirect the talk away from QB. I think it is a done deal unless we are offered a great trade.

The thing I found funny was he said teams picking high don't have a QB... was a window into what he really thinks about Clausen. He then made a point of saying that us considering a QB was not a knock against Clausen, LOL

Sounds like he is trying not to destroy Clausens confidence for SOME reason

b/c clausen is still a panther and might actually have to start next year...there is no need to come out and say clausen failed and we don't believe he is the guy to lead this team if your gonna come out in 3 days and draft another QB with the first overall pick...picking newton pretty much says that so why talk about it

hurney has never tried to redirect any questions concerning the QB position...

...and 95% of the questions asked are directed towards the QB position.

not saying carolina won't draft a QB...but we can't assume it's a done deal.

If you listen to the interview you can take two things away.

Gantt guided the conversation and kept it on the QBs so therefore Hurney talked about QBs..

You also could look at it as Hurney laying the groundwork for justifying taking Newton (or Gabbert) with the pick. #1. I think it may be a little of both.

But t did sound an awful lot like a guy about to take a QB IMO.

As for the Clausen thing he said most Franchise QBs are taken high in the first round, the percentages in the other rounds aren't very high. So when you're picking this high you have to look at the QBs and see how they fit in. Everyone wants to relate that back to Clausen and in Hurney's mind it has nothing to do with Clausen.

Hurney has believed in past that we can get by without franchise QB. What changed to get him to consider using first pick on QB. Then he responded with the quote teeray posted.

Who's to say that it wasn't all Hurney's choice to dictate exactly who's at the QB position. I mean "remember" we're hopefully moving away from "Fox Ball". I'd be inclined to believe a lot of the futility we saw at the QB position was more a product of the system Fox implored where a punt is ALWAYS seemingly a good play.

From what I've seen in recent drafts Hurney takes risks on players (Brown, Edwards, Hardy, etc) but going back I can't think of any QB's being selected who were ever really worth a damn aside from last season when we thought Clausen was supposed to be a "bargain" pick.

In the early interviews/PC's you here Rivera discuss the successful stature/proto-typical QB's as big, tall, strong armed. Clausen doesn't seem to fit his mold, and is not known for his deep accuracy and ability to push the ball downfield, which is something Chud has already expressed will be apart of our attack.

With that being said I think we are looking at Cam, he fits the vision (outside of the character concerns), has the arm, and has been commended on his vertical passes. He reminds me of a more athletic Donovan McNabb, remember Philly fans didn't want him and look where he took them. Can't wait to see what happens.

    • Yeah. As a wild card team. Washington won the division at 10-6.
    • no doubt but flip that.   The current system insures that there are "regional" games in the early weeks. maximizing the reach of playoff football.  If all of the WC weekend for a conference took place on the west coast they are reducing the "reach" of their hype machine.
    • Hard to say with London--he never ran--combine or pro day.  Here is what AI says, and it is always 100% accurate: Drake London's 40-yard dash time at the NFL Combine was not recorded because he was dealing with a fractured ankle at the time. While he didn't participate in the 40 at the Combine or his pro day, his coach said his 40 time was estimated to be between 4.4 and 4.53 seconds. Some sources also list his 40 time at 4.58 and 4.6 seconds Unless you are running 9s all day, top end 40 speed is rarely reached.  I have always looked at the 3-cone drill.  At his pro day, TMac ran a 6.86--pretty good, actually.  For context, it is faster that Rome Odunze (6.88) who ran a 4.45 40.  Odunze is 6'3" and weighs 216, fwiw, and is considered a very good route runner with no wasted motion.  Mike Evans 3-cone was 7.08.  To put it in a broader context, through 2022, with all NFL prospect 3-cone drills combined, a 6.86 puts TMac in the.89th percentile-  Now consider the fact that he is 6'4" and 220.   We might have something here.  '
