If you were a Pats fan last year, do you think they were up in arms when they traded Moss to the Vikings for a 3rd (ended up being just a two game loan)? Do you think they freaked when they gave up Seymour to Oakland for them to use for the remainder of the season...for a first? There's a fine line between getting what you can out of a player and selling while they seemingly have value that other teams see.

If he leaves, I'd probably buy another 89 jersey from whatever team he landed on. He has been the most exciting player I have ever watched in the NFL. Still remember the touchdown catch he had against the Rams in the playoffs. Love at first sight. That being said, I don't want him to leave.

From what I have heard Rivera gave him the option to go to OTAs and training camp and see what happens. It didn't sound like he was getting rid of him.

Plus if Smitty came into my office as head coach and demanded a trade I would oblige him feeling like if he is disgruntled he is one less problem to deal with. If he doesn't want to be here, then go elsewhere. Rivera would be smart to let him leave as well. Smitty is still a great player but if he is not on board to what Rivera is doing, he needs to go elsewhere. Rivera can't keep him here under those circumstances. To Rivera he is 7 million dollars to spend on other guys if he is traded.

For those that are cool with Rivera letting Smith walk, do you realize you're talking about Gettis and LaFell as the top 2 receivers next year? With Clausen most likely being the guy behind center? I understand the whole "let a guy leave if he doesn't wanna be here" philosophy, but anyone saying that Smith does nothing but cause trouble really needs to shut the hell up. He just wants the team to win games, just like the people that post on this board. He's never been as selfish as Julius was so that argument isn't valid. If Smitty decides to leave, I agree it will be mostly his own decision and not so much Rivera's, I like him and can respect why he would want a change. I'd prefer he stays but I wish him nothing but the best if he goes and would not worry too much about negative affects on our team.
