He's a physical freak and something people hadn't seen before at QB, so most people get scared and try to hope he will bust so they don't have to prepare and play against him.

If Cam is the uber-competitor that I think that he is, the only thing bigger than his smile should be that chip on his shoulder from being dissed by 90 percent of the talking heads,including those within message board forums.

When Cam succeeds,all those talking heads will turn into bobble heads, grinning and just looking plain stupid.

Newton is not benefiting from the lockout. NFL reporters are scrambling for anything to talk about and keep their jobs. Newton is the lowest hanging fruit that gets article views. I would not put much stock into it.

The negative press doesnt bother me.

1. It takes all pressure off of Cam. Everyone is doubting him.

2. I expected it. After a few QB busts at #1 in the past after all these experts were touting those guys as the next great ones, pretty obvious they werent going to make the same statements for Newton incase he doesnt pan out.

3. Those experts are idiots. Take McShay for example. He kept saying the Panthers have no talent around Newton. Really?? I know the Panthers wasnt any good on offense last season, but the talent is obvious. He also said Panthers are in the spot they are in now, bc of taking risks in the past. Another just plain dumb statement.

I can live with everyone doubting Cam. He is going to do some pretty awesome things for us and the media will then be on his jock. I would much rather it be that way than the opposite alternative.

He is pretty unique in this way. Most #1 picks are at least 50/50 and even then it's usually because the analysts think there was another player at the same position who was better. Here Cam has been called the ultimate risk and being labeled the next Jamarcus Russell before he ever steps foot on the field.

The ironic thing is that not even Russell himself was subject to this level of negativity when he went 1st overall. There were a few I recall saying it was a mistake, but not many. As I said in another thread, I think a lot of them got burned by Russell and now are taking it out on Cam, who is easy to compare because of his race, size, & big arm.

The only situation I can recall in recent years that compares is when the Texans passed on Reggie Bush for Mario Williams. Most "experts" bashed them up and down for the decision, but history has proved them to be correct. Hopefully it'll work out the same way for us with Cam.

Nah, Russell didnt get this much criticism. I didnt understand why he went #1 overall that year either. I was on this board in 2006 and never hyped him up. I just dont remember a lot of fanfare or controversy over him until he held out that offseason. Thats when the media started really putting the microscope on J Russell. But with Cam, this has been going on since November, and I feel part of it is because he so dominated college football to some of the media types they see him as the "bad guy" and this is "payback". Ive never seen a prospect be called a "bust" like this in the media before he even hits the field. I think a lot of people understand Cam has a unique skill set and maybe they're intimidated by what he has the potential to bring to the game and our franchise.

I think that's a big part of it, yeah. Any time you get a different sort of player that's going to happen. Thing is, today's NFL is evolving to the point where athletic, mobile QB's are not only the norm, but preferred. Look at Aaron Rodgers, Big Ben, Mike Vick, even Sam Bradford has some good mobility. Not to mention The Golden Calf of Bristol.

It's the way the QB position in college has evolved and as a result the NFL has been forced into adapting to it themselves. A QB who can't evade pressure is as good as gone in the NFL with all the aggressive defenses we see these days.

Hell, two of the best "traditional" QB's in the league in Manning & Brady were eliminated from the playoffs last year by the aggressive Jets defense, who they couldn't get away from. Meanwhile, mobile QB's in Rodgers & Roethlisberger end up in the Super Bowl.

Not saying a traditional QB can't win these days because obviously Brady was MVP and Manning is probably the best of all time, but when you look at the evolution of the position and of NFL defenses, mobility and escapability are becoming a huge part of playing QB.

he's being criticized because his resume doesn't translate to NFL QB, so its all a gamble and open question he will adapt to the NFL.

He ran an offense at Auburn that isnt' close to NFL Caliber, barely passed the ball and when he did he was not accurate. Combine with that he wasn't at all accurate at the Combine passing, which is a must for an NFL QB.

Because of those things, and his dad shopping him around, his cheating at laptop stealing at Florida....is why he's low hanging fruit for the Media

This franchise has truly only been an elite QB away from shitting all over teams.. throw in some intelligent offensive minded coaches and I hope for the day the Panthers show their true colors that FANS know, yet we can't say much because we always hovered around 8-8..

I have been quite for the past several weeks but will say now I wanted Cam as our QB.

If he busts then I was wrong. I love the attention he is getting. If he had gone to most any other team he would be getting more positive press but since he came here, well you know what I mean. Carolina is a joke to most of the league but I think that is about to change at least I hope it is. QB is the most important position and now we have someone with the potential be great. I am excited!
