Positive articles regarding drafting Newton?

Look, I was never on the Newton bandwagon 100%. But holy god, the amount of negative press this guy (and Carolina) is getting is amazing. I have never seen a #1 get as much negative spin. I honestly have yet to see a fully positive article regarding Carolina drafting him. At the very best, articles have gone to the whole "boom or bust" mantra. I don't believe I've seen any writer say with full confidence that Newton is the guy.

Now look, no one knows if he'll make it or not. But sports journalism is all about predicting and pretending you know whether someone will succeed. So certainly there has to be a few writers that are taking the leap and are fully on the Newton bandwagon. But where are they??

ARE there any positive articles out there? And I mean written by those in the sports journalism world, not just other internet bloggers and commentators. From ESPN to NFL.com to SI.com to Sportsline and even our own Charlotte Observer, I have yet to see a completely positive article about Newton. I have yet to see any sportswriter comment that picking Newton was the best decision and that he was the best QB in the class. At best, I've only seen that Carolina was basically "forced" to take him.

Nope. Hell, even people like Schefter are saying we had the worst draft simply because Andrew Luck chose to stay in college.

I know he's a great QB, but to totally ignore the upside Cam has, and the rest of the draft the organization had.....it's just mind-blowing.

I'm hoping it just adds more fuel to the fire for Cam. He has the ability to be "the guy," hopefully this gets him riled up enough to harness that potential. I agree with you though, I haven't seen any positive articles about him either. He seems to be the guy that everyone loves to hate. That doesn't bother me though, as long as he wins games.

This is about the only 100% positive one I've seen.

I feel badly for him but you can't ask for better motivation.

Just read the article, first one I've seen of its kind. I thought maybe there were more Newton-lovers than I thought; then I got to the comments.

I just think its funny, its like they forgot that this Franchise is starting over. I'm pretty sure Ron and Chud knows what they are doing. I swear this offense will be SICK. The stupid people on ESPN dont know Sh*t. They just get paid to run their mouth along the same lines as everyone else, haha. I have faith in Rivera and We'll show everyone else whats up

There are plenty of people that say Newton could very well succeed and he'll be a great pick, but really, anyone objective has to be looking in and going "Wow, that was a risk... and it'll either really pay off big, or cost a GM his job."

Frankly I don't see a big risk at all. The question to me is whether the coaches will work with him to develop him and bring him along. With his physical skills and hard working attitude, it is a matter of when he becomes successful not really if. If the defense develops like it should and injuries are reasonable, there is no way that Newton can't be as successful as Sanchez for example. Sure he has a lot to learn but that means it will take time to learn and traditionally teams had time to do that. it is a relatively new concept that first rounders had to be stars right away and impact players.

his success will be that much sweeter..

He reminds me of the last top of the 1st round pick we had... Peppers. He just happens to play the other side of the ball.

He's a physical freak and something people hadn't seen before at QB, so most people get scared and try to hope he will bust so they don't have to prepare and play against him.

      I agree.  Some situations are all we should ask--shadow the qb (someone suggested that) or cover a TE, or blitz from the big nickel position.  Forget S, edge, CB,LB--

      I work with social emotional learning and I don't know why a player with all the tools (to Snow's point) sucks when he was a top 10 player in college.  It is not talent, and it is usually not due to some learning disability-.  It comes down to dispositions or emotions in a lot of cases. The reason I pointed out Simmons in particular is because he was drafted to be a DC's new weapon.  I have friends who played in the NFL and they talk about the amount they throw at you--and those were guys who played 1 position.  Simmons shows his ability on special teams--where you are a bit more turned loose than scripted or forced to read blocking schemes or pass routes, etc.  See ball, get ball.  Simmons has been tried at CB, nickel, S , LB edge and he has had 5 different coordinators if you do not count the STs guy.  This would overwhelm most people.  Nobody knows what it does to your confidence and motivation to go from the best player on your team and a top college player to getting cut.   I just think that players like this can be saved.  To say, "He just isn't good" is not to answer the question, "Why was this not noticed during the interviews?  game film?  Combine?  References?  etc.  No, there has to be something more to it than that.  I think Isaiah needs one job and that job should be aligned with a strength.  If he fails then, fine.  Maybe he lost his mojo.  Maybe he never had it.  But to understand what he has been through is to give the guy the benefit of the doubt.  If you played in high school, you got a happy meal version of what it is like in college.  College was an appetizer when compared to pros.  We shall see.  But I am more optimistic about Simmons than I am XL.  Simmons was asked to things most NFL players cannot do.  XL just needs to catch the damn ball in bounds.   Middle schoolers do it every day.

      This was a super interesting analysis....and I will say I dont think it prevents us from looking at Safety in the draft. IF Ransom takes a step up and outplays Moehrig, there is an out for them after the year as a potential cap cut.  EVEN if not, if you are right and Simmons shows some promise as a Big nickel and Moehrig gets  injured and Ransom looks good (or even if Moehrig looks bad) I could see him being a cap casualty in 2027 as long as we feel we have enough talent there as starting potential.  Lotta football to play and Lotta injuries to happen.  Im hopeful because his measurables are through the roof, but unless they translate you still gotta go with what you got.
