Will Cam be coddled?

Recommended Posts

I hope Rivera is ALL OVER Cam Newton whenever they get to start practicing. Players always say that during camps and pre-season games, the game speed is nothing compared to the regular season.

That said, I hope Rivera gets that defense going full speed, makes our corners jam the WR's, and throw all kinds of blitzes at him. That is the only way he's going to learn. I think once we get him going against a full speed defense, then we'll know if he's really got that potential.

He looks good against air, and he looks good against college players. Here's to hoping he looks just as good against Mr. Beason & Co. this summer. :sifone:

He'll be coddled this year while he holds a clipboard on the sideline.

So, you think Cam sits this year, eh? What if things start falling apart ala 2010? Do we bring him in like we did Jimmy? No doubt the fans will be calling for him at that point...

As of right now, Cam gives us the best chance of winning. So unless the vet QB we bring in is Hasslebeck, Bulger, Volek, or even Matt Moore if we decide he is the guy, Cam is going to be starting week one if we want to win right now.

I wonder if Cam can handle being pushed hard to succeed. Here in the big leagues where we don't have perfect seasons, and will experience times of frustration, how will Cam react to this new world? I sensed in the Gruden camp episode, he got a little defensive about that one play in the national championship game where he refused to take a knee. He pull that with Rivera and he will likely get pulled from the game. So it will be interesting.

I don't think he will be given a pass from the coaching staff and treated like he's any different than other players. Since we annouced Rivera as coach I've read / watched everything I could find about him and he doesn't strike me as running that sort of ship.

A lot of our fans might give him a pass on poo but the coahces? Nah

Yeah, but I honestly expect him to be third on the depth chart for a while behind whatever vet we bring in and :jc:

What the fans want really doesn't matter, if they don't think he's ready then he should continue to sit and learn.

I think he will be used right away in certain plays designed for him specifically but sparingly from what I read. He just won't be the starter, a vet will be brought in. I agree he will be the 3rd in line to start behind Jimbo..

    • It's still CJ by a wide margin.  BY has closed the gap, but the gap is still considerably large.  Let's not forget CJ was without basically ALL of his weapons in this last game against the Patriots, and I'm pretty sure he had an injury.  BY lost to that same Pats team by like 40 points.  In fairness, a good bit of that was due to the defense.  That said, BY was completely incapable of keeping us in the game.  Mistake free football does not always equal good football.  He still had a bad game.
    • Playing QB in this league is tough.  I can't hate on a man's work ethic without knowing exactly what it is.  From everything I've read about him, I seriously doubt his work ethic has dropped.  He had 2 concussions in 2 years, has his OL downgraded, got a different OC, and lost his best weapons due to injury in these short 2 years after his rookie year.  Throw that in with teams having more film on him and the drop-off makes sense.  Maybe he needs to change what he does in the offseason to adapt better, but I doubt he has an issues with work ethic.
