New York is hopping on the Panthers bandwagon

Recommended Posts

So, I haven't posted in a while due to the fact that I have been in the Big Apple mainly parts of Time Square, Rockefeller Plaza, 5th Avenue, and Chinatown where I was enjoying the sights, sounds, food, and attractions all apart of my senior trip.

It just happens to be that I am labeled a nerd at my school not for mathematical or scientific references but for being able to pull random athletic and sports statistics out of thin air because sports and athletics are my life and always will be (I am studying to be a professional coach at Liberty University next year). I also get this label because nearly all of my clothes represent the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Bobcats/Charlotte Hornets (I like my retro attire), Carolina Hurricanes, North Carolina Tar Heels, and Manchester United Red Devils. On a few days I wore this particular outfit throughout Time Square, Rockefeller Plaza, and 5th Avenue...

And at every stop I was getting a shout out from random people that just felt the need to say "Go Panthers" or "Go Cam Newton", I just turned, smiled, and continued my fun activities. I also saw about ten other individuals throughout New York decked out in some Panthers attire that I talked to for a brief moment, but most of my conversations came with employees from various stores such as the cashier at Lids (Hat Store), the tour guide at Radio City Music Hall (I saw where Cam Newton walked the stage and became the face of the Panthers), the waiter at Bubba Gump's Shrimp (Restaurant), a Security Guard for the filming of a “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close” (Movie about 9/11 that will premier in 2012), and just a random store employee at Nintendo World/Pokémon Center (He liked Jimmy Clausen). They all wanted to know what I though about Cam Newton and they all hoped that the Panthers did well this year (If we have football). Overall I was thoroughly shocked with the amount of people I talked to about the Panthers and how many people in New York actually liked the Panthers.

It was a great experience that I just wanted to share with you guys. :cam:

I realize this is some extreme huggerism but Cam Newton has the potential to not only be a superstar but the biggest superstar in the entire NFL.

If he can turn into a good QB he has the looks, charisma, recognition, etc. to be one of the most marketable figures in all of sports.

I would not be surprised if several of those were AU alumni. The AU message board I go to has several threads about the Panthers and how they are everyone's favorite pro team now.

I would say 50%+ of AU alums leave the state after graduation and go live somewhere else (the state of alabama doesn't have much going for it except Auburn University and Gulf Shores / Orange Beach). When Cam won the heisman there were hundreds of AU fans there and I am sure many are residents. Since I graduated, I have lived in Atlanta, Houston, Miami, and Boca Raton (FL) and spent a couple of summers in Orange Beach.

AU fans needed a franchise to get behind. The Falcons have always been it, but only because it is an hour and a half from AU. There are literally tens of thousands of new Panther fans from the AU fan base easily. And AU fans are pretty passionate and loyal. I'm all Panthers now regardless of how Cam does though I expect he will be successful. With all the crap AU fans and Cam had to put up with last year, I am fired up to see him do well in the NFL and shut the haters up for good (and there are a LOT of them with big mouths, but dumb as hell).

i, for one, welcome all bandwagoners.

the more, the merrier.

Good deal. I'm here and I'm not leaving. Whether Cam does well or struggles. I've needed enough reason to pick a favorite team in the NFL for years and never really could find a good one, so I adopted the Dolphins and Texans, but never really got to where I cared much about the Fins. The Texans I still like since I went to games in my time in Houston and they are an underdog type, but I didn't really like Houston (the city itself). The Panther's appeal to me. They are not winners right now, I pulled for them in the super bowl years ago, they are still a young franchise, they are "Cats" like AU, wear blue like AU, are in the South, and I have been in NC many times (mostly hiking, camping and stuff when I was in high school and college).

Throw in Cam, and I think I have finally found a home.

You know, behind you was a decent looking girl. What did she ask about?

    • I must apologize, my sarcasm at times doesnt translate well in text form lol. At this point I would welcome us signing him, Trey Lance, trading for Jameis Winston, asking about Deshaun Watson and playing phone tag with Tom Brady before I ever fully entertain a season of Bryce Young being the defacto Starting Quarterback of the Panthers.

    • We had a QB who could do that and its the last time we went to the Super Bowl and the only time we had an MVP. Once he lost his ability to do that he was out of the league. To filter out insignificant stats I will only look at QBs who have played in 10 or more games this year. There are 28 qualifying QBs. Bryce is 25th in Air Yards per Attempt at 6.4. Only Joe Flacco, Cam Ward, and Dillon Gabriel are worse (6.0, 5.8, 5.1). Trevor Lawrence, Patrick Mahomes, and CJ Stroud are the median QBs at 7.1. Drake Maye and Sam Darnold lead the league at 8.7. Bryce is 18th in the league for passes that travel 30+ yards at 12. The median is Caleb Williams at 15. The league leader is Matthew Stafford with 26. With passes that travel 40+ yards, Bryce is tied with three others at 21st in the league with 3. Only Jacoby Brissett, Cam Ward, Joe Flacco, and Dillon Gabriel are worse. The median is a three-way tie with Drake Maye, Trevor Lawrence, and Baker Mayfield with 6. The league leader is Sam Darnold with 12. Having the ability to complete passes down the field (not YAC) stretches the defense and makes them account for more ground. It keeps players out of the box and keeps formations in nickel or dime, less line backers for your RBs to worry about. Bryce is why we have 2 losses against the Saints. If he had the outright ability to sling the football down field we beat the easily, but he doesn't. So they crowded the box and our 2 starting caliber RBs with our top ~10 Oline couldn't carry the offense to a win on their own. The limitations of the offense fall squarely on Bryce.
