For Matt Moore: Bad News and Good News

Mr. Scot

Umm if this is directed at me I haven't advocated any veteran coming in because we drafted Cam. It's his team, he will sink or swim this year.

I've never liked "mentors"

Good try though?

Actually it wasn't. More at the "Bring in Volek" cries from months gone by.

About the only thing I think we somewhat agree on is Moore got a crap deal here from Fox before he left. I think Moore could be a mid-tier starter/upgrade for some team out there (Like Arizona... he might actually do something out there).

as soon as Fox was gone I thought Moore was left without a foundation of support that would give him a roster spot on the Panthers for the next NFL season. I walked that back a little bit and waffled upon hearing Rivera's introductory news conference. These days, in the Newton era, I just don't see a way for him to stay on the team, unless he gets no attention whatsoever in free agency and is willing to fight for a roster spot in training camp. I doubt that is going to happen.

At this point in his career he doesn't fit the profile for a QB on the Panthers' roster. Clausen isn't going anywhere except in a trade, and I think everyone suspects that's not feasible right now due to his low low value after a cruddy rookie season. Newton is the golden boy and the heir apparent. Pike is cheap and a real unknown who could become useful under organized and focused tutelage. He could also be dumped after training camp and never heard from again. The other QB spot is going to have to be for a guy who can run the ship and be a steady presence in the case of any of the other younger QB's not getting it done or being erratic or getting hurt. For all his potential (albeit a mediocre amount), Matt Moore is not that guy. He can't make an argument for consistency, and he doesn't have season after season of production and experience in multiple offensive schemes to hang his hat on. He's had his flashes of success, but it's going to take a team who can see potential in him for him to get another significant chance to show what he can do. That's going to happen somewhere else.

.

better QBs have been cut. if Clausen's is as bad in pratice as reported.....I am still not 100% certain he is on this team with a non lame duck coach.

Moore would be an upgrade here, but it's more complicated than that.

There are a lot of possibilities out there and a lot of it depends on where some of the larger names fall.

I still would like to see us sign him back, get rid of Clausen and keep Pike behind Cam. Let MM open the season and work Cam in to take over, then trade MM to the destination of his liking for some draft picks. The guy can play and he's going to be good when given a legit shot somewhere.

Cam is our guy, and as I've said in the past, I wish we could keep MM here forever, but he's got to use his abilities while he still has them and he can do that starting somewhere else... So we may as well benefit from it IMO.

matt moore is the new billy volek. he'll have his group of supporters who will always think he could have been something somewhere given a chance, but who actually did have a chance and wasn't able to capitalize it simply because he just didn't have 'it'.

he may get a shot somewhere, but it won't be a long term job. nice guy, but as a starting/franchise QB....meh.....

don't care where he goes. i like him better than clausen, but the panthers really need to move on from both. neither really have much to offer except maybe in a supporting role, but clausen doesn't fit the offense and moore just doesn't fit the bill as an experienced vet/mentor. he's just filler.

I wouldn't go so far as to say that... but if he stayed here, and let some of the other dead weight go, I'd be happy with that.

Matt was not ready to be a starter mentally. Most guys just are not Tom Brady to seize the role and come with that "killer instinct." Its probally the main reason that he went undrafted and is still a question mark to even those who watch his success at the NFL level.

In game one I think he still had the passive "im the backup mentality and not the "control the huddle and demand excellence" role Delhomme was strong at.

As we all know, Fox reluctantly gave him the "Starter" title but was flat out hesitant to use him prior to Delhomme's departure. So Matt was has been doubted since he has been on the roster....not exactly coaching up a guy to assume the role....good job Foxie..

Once he got his feet under him and the line "gelled" a little bit from the shockingly first two awful games..he played like a Matt Moore his supporters thought they saw in prior years. team moved the ball..still had issues..but it at least looked like a somewhat competitive team than what we saw the other games..

..in other words he is not a bad QB to have on the roster. Claussen really mucks his future up with Carolina and I think Moore is the better player between the two. Claussen's "potential*" and low cap number will keep him here and Moore is not the teaching type..but isn't that what Shula and Chud are for?!

*the old inexperience mulligan....

**also a whole post without the words Cam Newton in it! <=doh!

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
