does Terrelle Pryor as a back-up for Cam Newton make sense?

troy smith and tarvaris jackson aren't young players anymore. jackson is 28 years old now. i do think it would be nice to have an older vet who has been in the game a long time to help in the film room and in meetings and to be a set of experienced eyes on the sidelines, but he wouldn't need to be the #2 QB.

we got our franchise QB now. who else they have on the depth chart doesn't really matter all that much. they'll get the right guys behind him and around him.

HUH!!??? i did NOT say anything about Jackson or Troy Smith hahaha, now those two i wouldnt mind signing as backups, BUT Terrelle Pryor should go to a team who needs a QB to develop, the panthers have that. Teams like Miami, Seattle, Washington and Buffalo dont which is why i say Pryor to those teams, personally, i like Pryor's potential and hope the Redskins take a gamble on him, as for Jackson, dont want him even as a backup, Troy Smith though is worth a shot.

hahaha, no i am discussing Pryor. i am one of few who would like to have him on a team as a future starter and if he goes to Carolina i fear he never gets the chance. i like Troy Smith as a backup, never been high on Jackson though. he just never caught my eye, but Smith had a great college career and is a good backup, he's not a starter due to his height and decision making. Smith would be a good backup and possibly mentor to Newton.

Pryor would make a great Wide Receiver or Tight End.

dont know about that because while he's fast, he has NEVER run routes as a receiver and i think his blocking as a tight end may suck. a team WILL draft Pryor and will draft him as a QB and likely would use him as a project and future starting QB.

I think Clausen has made progress in his game. He looked like he was in much better shape in those workout pics. If he continued to learn the game through this offseason he should be more accustomed to the NFL.

I think that Jimmy will be able to manage the game in case something happens to Cam.

Ohio state vs Texas a couple of years ago. Bowl game. He caught a TD as a wide out... he has WR experience. TE experience is lacking but It's nothing he can't learn. Even if he is exclusively a wide out. He's fast enough and would be a red zone Target anyway, also a 1st down conversion machine.

that would make things a lot simpler. still, i can't see him sticking around to be a backup. could be a lot like the eagles/kolb situation.

kolb isn't worth the pick they are asking for, but they don't really have any incentive to trade kolb away as he would make a decent backup for them. he's more of a luxury than anything. they don't need him and they don't need to get rid of him. if they can get a first rounder for him from some QB desperate team (like the cards), then cool. they would probably even settle for a 2nd. if they can't...then they are still in good shape.

don't know that clausen is even on the same level as kolb (not that kolb is all that great himself) but he could be with the right coaching. kolb and clausen may not like being career backups, but as long as they are under contract that might be all there is for them. best situation is to have some team make a desperate trade.

catching one touchdown vs. a college team isnt much WR experience, i am NOT saying it can't be done, i just dont think it's as easy as some make it sound, ADD to that, he WANTS to play Quarterback. As for TE, he can learn it, BUT like i said, he will have to learn to block which wont be easy. like i said, i dont think the risk is right for Carolina, they have LaFell and Gettis and a project at WR already in Edwards, no need for another project at WR. a QB needy team needs to get Pryor.

That’s great value for a player who in a lot of ways resembles Cam Newton, the Heisman Trophy winner out of Auburn and soon-to-be multimillionaire taken No. 1 overall by the Carolina Panthers in April.

The truth is, Pryor, at 6-foot-6 and 240 pounds, has considerably more experience as a college quarterback than Newton, with a 31-4 record and MVP awards in BCS wins in the Rose Bowl and Sugar bowls.

He’s a faster runner than Newton and has comparable arm strength. Former Ohio State assistant Doug Plank said Pryor was the fastest player on the Ohio State roster, which included Chimdi Chekwa, the fleet corner the Raiders drafted in the fourth round.

Pryor has the same questions regarding his pocket passing that have dogged Newton, although it would be difficult to convince Oregon of that based on the way Pryor carved up the Ducks (23 of 37, 266 yards, two touchdowns) in the Rose Bowl after the 2009 season.

Playing in an offense not nearly as suited to his skill set as Newton had at Auburn, Pryor last season passed for 2,772 yards with 27 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions to go with 754 yards rushing and four scores
