USA Today: 5 biggest questions facing the Panthers

The NFL lockout has dampened the usual offseason analysis of each team's comings and goings. But, lockout or not, the league will still be moving on at some point -- hopefully in time for the regular season to start on time Sept. 8. And during the labor impasse, USA TODAY will focus back on the field by breaking down the five biggest questions facing each team for the 2011 season.

Up today: The Carolina Panthers.

Those are pretty much facing the questions this season, except for the first one. It shouldn't be will Cam Newton be the starter, but, how will he do as a starter.

Also, the idea of bringing back Kerry Collins is laughable.

can't argue with a lot of it. it's gonna be tough.

i think where they are wrong is newton being "stripped" of his opportunity to learn the playbook. he's going to be fine in that regard, but there are a lot of other areas that it would have been beneficial to be around his coaches.

i also don't think the bucs have far more weapons on offense than the panthers. they don't have a better Oline, RB corps, or receiving corps. QB was the only position that they are better and that won't be for long.

there are worse choices that could be made as a backup.

bulger would be great, though.

:(

The only reason all the teams in this division had a better Defense then us was because of our horrible Offense.

With a few FA signings and bringing back some core players we will have the best D in this division.

We will make some people look stupid this season.

with an adequate amount of weapons and intelligent people devising gameplans, I don't care how tough the schedule is..

if Cam can throw the ball, our OLine can execute, we have WRs who can run routes, TEs who can stretch the field, and RBs who can hit the holes with authority..

I ain't skeerred..

Not so fast my friend.

I am not 100% sold that Cam will be the starter this season.

1. Rivera has stated many times that he intends to bring in a vet QB.

2. There will be a very shortened off-season schedule due to the labor dispute...seriously hampering the maturation of a rookie QB

I believe that the Vet will be signed....that the vet will be the starter in Game #1...and Cam will only see the field if the offense struggles.

Now, #3 is likely. So, Cam will probably start about half way through the season.

Pretty good article all and all but I get a little tired of hearing just how awful this organization and team is.

I feel we aren't as futile as people think. We have the talent to be in playoff contention next year (assuming Johnson, Williams, and Smith are back).

One bad season with a lame duck coach does not make you the worst organization in the NFL.

And if the Cam pick pays off the sky is the limit for the future of this franchise.

    • What's wrong with Damien Lewis? He played pretty well last year.
    • Official NFL Cuts Tracker Deadline for roster cuts is Tuesday, August 26th. At this moment (Friday, August 22nd) the only interesting names I see are... K Caden Davis (BUF) RB Ameer Abdullah (SF) WR Equanimeous St. Brown (SF) WR Donovan Peoples-Jones (NO) LB Khaleke Hudson (TEN) Abdullah, St. Brown, Peoples-Jones I don't exactly think we should cut anybody for but it was just interesting seeing those names. Khaleke Hudson was on the Panthers' practice squad last year I believe and might have even gotten called up? And of course, Caden Davis just because of the question mark at kicker this season for the team.
    • I'll say 6/10. I don't know that we learned a whole lot about this team during preseason that we didn't already know. We didn't play the starters enough to really get a feel for what to expect. We had one good drive against the Browns, one 3-and-out and two 3-and-outs against the Texans. That's an extremely small sample size across 3 games regardless of performance. My camp/preseason takeaways: Jalen Coker might be the best WR on this team and is certainly no worse than #2. Nic Scourton is going to be a good player for us. Possibly very good. Bobby Brown was our best free agent addition. Jack Plummer isn't an NFL QB. Not even a practice squad guy. Having anyone other than Canales and Evero call plays was a really stupid and pointless idea. Our depth is largely non-existent, especially on defense. The three areas we actually DO have depth are on the OL, in the WR corp. and at RB. I can't fathom why Dan Morgan didn't do more to upgrade ILB during the offseason. We better hope Lathan Ransom steps up at FS because if he doesn't we have a massive hole. For all the hype surrounding Sanders/Evans, Tommy Tremble is still the best TE on the roster. I'm only slightly less enthusiastic going into the regular season than I was a month ago. I think our starters on offense are solid and we should be pretty good there unless Bryce totally regresses. On defense, we're probably bottom 3rd in the league if 100% healthy and significantly worse than that if injuries become an issue. We badly need at least two of our rookies to become high-level players early (ideally one of the pass rushers + Ransom) and at least 2 of our free agent additions (ideally Moehrig + Bobby Brown) to be significant upgrades over last year. Call me pessimistically optimistic 😆
