Is there a split on Johnson's deal?

CJ has consistently played well every time they let him in the game, even before last year. Unfortunately John "I'll watch Deshaun Foster trip over his own shoelaces after two yards and fumble before I ever sit a vet" Fox didn't let that happen all that often.

CJ didn't step up his play all that much last year. He just had more plays overall.

Yeah he did. He was able to play every down at a high level which speaks to increased endurance and stamina. Without Peppers, he was often double teamed and still made plays and his strength busting through linemen to seal the edge and play the run has improved significantly.

He is a very complete player and a load now which is a distinct upgrade over him being largely a situational player in the past.

That is why he got such a huge contract and is worth every cent of it.

Will Smith plays on a defense which gets lots of opportunity for sacks given teams are forced to throw to stay in the game with New Orlean's offense. Johnson got 11 sacks against teams who were running the ball after halftime to protect big leads. Johnson is much better than Smith and is being paid accordingly. Given McDermott's aggressive defense, I expect him to get 15 sacks this year.

That's a big number! Swag for the optimism and later swag if he does it.

you need to remind me tho :p

i think that is something alot of people seem to miss, CJ's game is hard to appreciate for some fans, he's not alot of flash, he just brings it every sunday which is what we need more of up front

Agreed. Mark this comment: CJ will have better stats that Julius Peppers during the course of their respective contracts. Mark it.

Increased stamina from what?

The knock on Johnson when he came here was that he had a great frame to build upon but he needed to bulk up and work on his conditioning. Every year at camp he comes in bigger, stronger, and more determined. His strength and ability to just bowl people is very impressive. He has been working on his stamina and endurance for the past 2 years. What is his increased stamina from? I hope the answer is hard work and consistent reps against a pretty good offensive line.

He surely has the potential and McDermott's defense makes it hard for teams to double team players without accounting for the frequent blitzers. It should give Johnson the ability to put up career numbers this year. I am definitely excited.

agreed. it's no guarantee, but for sure with a more aggressive gameplan and more help from the interior of the line, we should see an increase in production from him.
