Ron Edwards, NT, Kansas City. Doesn't ring a bell......

And what they're saying......

Uh-oh. The Kansas City Chiefs nose tackle position will look different in the 2011-12 season. The KC Star's Adam Teicher reports NT Ron Edwards agreed to a three-year deal with the Carolina Panthers.

[update: ESPN's Adam Schefter reports it's three years, $8.25 million.]

This brings about a myriad of questions for the team.

Did the Chiefs try to re-sign him? Were they out-bid? Do they have another free agency plan at nose tackle?

To me, this is a surprising move. I figured with the lockout taking up the entire offseason that someone like Edwards would be a no-brainer to come back to town. The Chiefs drafted NT Jerrell Powe but it's far from certain that he'll be a capable contributor in 2011 considering the team hasn't even seen him yet.

The Chiefs may now be in the market for a nose tackle. Teicher also reported the Chiefs are trying to re-sign Shaun Smith, who has some nose tackle experience, so that's an option, but I wonder if they have their eye on anyone in free agency.

Our first big Chiefs free agency surprise. Stay tuned to see what happens next. I'm hoping GM Scott Pioli has a plan for this.

Yes, John Fox is gone from Carolina. But it looks like the Panthers are going back to the philosophy they followed in his early years.

They’re building around the defensive line. A day after agreeing to terms on a deal that will keep defensive end Charles Johnson with the team, the Panthers have addressed what’s been a glaring weakness in recent years. They just went out and spent some decent money on a defensive tackle in free agency.

They’ve agreed to terms with former Kanas City defensive tackle Ron Edwards, according to Adam Schefter. He’s agreed to a three-year deal worth $8.25 million.

Edwards is a pure run stopper and that’s something the Panthers need. He’s never had more than four sacks in a season, but the Panthers can get those from Johnson and others. They’re bringing in Edwards, 32, to help solidify the run defense.

He’ll act as a bridge and give rookies Terrell McClain and Sione Fua some time to develop.

    • Nobody on the huddle is saying we have an elite group offensively across the board. They aren't great. They're young. If you are expecting someone to agree with your position of blaming everyone around Bryce Young nearly three full seasons into his career you are going to be left holding the bag save for a handful of people who act like they are paid to defend his honor. Bryce Young is not a guy who has had to claw and fight his way into starting jobs in football. He's had the best to work with and been gifted roles since he was a teenager. The Panthers have one of the youngest rosters in the league and with us needing an infusion of young defensive talent in the upcoming draft we're only going to get younger. We need a QB who possesses the ability to elevate those around him. If you can't agree with me on that then there's nothing further to discuss.
    • All Bryce and the Panthers had to do was split with the Saints and a rookie QB. The bar was so low. They even had a whole bye week to prepare. The time for singing kumbaya was before that game. Anyone still talking about Bryce earning a second contract 43 games into his career is living a fantasy. He might get one from the Tepper owned Panthers but he's damn sure not earned it.
