for the last few years this team has made it clear that they are committed to developing their young talent. what the hell do you guys want them to do? spend years developing their young talent then let them walk for higher $ to a team that's invested nothing in them up to this point? if they didn't pay CJ or DW big money and lost that battle, then the front office would be completely abandoning everything they've stood for in recent years.

and for those of you that simply think they overpaid...do you think you know more about CJ's and DW's market value? do you think you know more about what atlanta and denver were putting out there than hurney and JR? do you honestly think that our hurney and jr all of a sudden have no business acumen and said "who cares what their market value is and what it's gonna take to the retain them, pay them millions more than we need to!!!"

gtfo.

everyone does realize this is a passing era....and the rules cater to that.....therefore it is easier to put point up on the scoreboard passing?

I keep reading how Williams and Stewart are both getting 15 touches a game....but that ain't realistic on a regular basis. To a large degree today's NFL is being structured to outscore people.........and trying to do that on the ground is on uphill battle.

Awesome contract.

Awesome decision.

We had more pressing needs. I'm hoping for a monster season from him. If not... this is on par with giving Jake Delhomme $18 million.

not even close.

You have to remember that we have JStew backing him up, and I highly doubt we would let JStew go while we have DWill. This increases DWill's longevity, because of the fact that he doesn't have to carry the ball every down. This will easily let him carry on for those 5 years, and 21 guaranteed easily pays him for the expectation of ability for the next 3.

So excited about this deal.

You need a solid running game, especially in the playoffs. Because the passing game "era," teams compensate for getting talent in the secondary. You can't put all your eggs in one basket(passing game) because then defenses know you are going to pass, and compensate. Unless you have the best QB ever to play the game and 3-4 WR's that are unstoppable, a pass only attack won't work. If your passing game gets shut down, you need a running game to keep defenses guessing.

We are not over spending. We. Are just using the money we would have had to use on Cam to keep our own guys. We are pretty lucky the new cba hit when it did or we would had to pay 70 million to him.

Where the hell have you been? I thought you rage quit the internet.

D-lo may have gotten an excessive contract, but please don't compare this to Jake Delhommes Pay2Suck contract. None of Hurney's Blunders (at least recent) compare to that.

Williams is at his peak/prime and the contract actually came a year too late. He's worth the contract.

I'm guessing most of the griping is that most of us hope that these contracts don't take away from actually signing a 'good' free agent.

Resigning is cool and all, but the team still has holes.

so 4.25 a year guaranteed but could go over 8. who's pissed?

Your comment shows that you do not understand the guaranteed portion of the contract.

This is not an incentive laden contract. If you pay him less than the full contract, you get less than 5 years of service.

The only way that he gets less is if you release him early.

but the money we are saving on Cam could go to fill big holes on this team with really good talent.

DeAngleo was big money on a position of little need.

Seems like the rookie wage gave us an opportunity we aren't fully taking advantage of. Outside of QB.....what weakness has been addressed? There is legit talent out there to fill those needs. Looks like Jerry has no interest in those guys....and will settle for trying to find a diamond in the rough.

    • Right, so basically what I said in my first post about this last night. Tepper needs to use that big wallet of his in one of the few ways it can be used in the NFL given the cap.   Give Scourton a bigger signing bonus but not a fully guaranteed deal. Everyone wins in that scenario as if Scourton is smart and hires good money people, he'll take that bigger signing bonus and use it to make more money in the end over the next 4 years than if he just had his fully guaranteed deal and a smaller signing bonus.
    • It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ
